Abstract

Thixotropic gravure printing inks contain a resin binder, pigment, solvent system, and an effective amount of a rheology modifier. Preferably the inks contain about 0.1 to about 10 percent by weight of the rheology-modifying agent. Preferably the rheology modifier is an aluminium salt of a C8-C18 alkanoic acid or a mixture of such salt with a C10-C20 fatty acid. Other rheology modifiers include polyesters, alkyd resins, polymerised oil derivatives, acrylic polymers and organic-modified clays. The use of the thixotropic inks minimises the penetration of the ink into the paper to which it is applied.
