Abstract

A vertical cylinder for drying, pyrolysis and gasification of blocks of wood is fitted with a jacketed top cowl. The annulus of the cowl receives the intake air which is then passed to the outer annulus of the double-jacketed cylinder for air preheating. Nozzles near the bottom direct the preheated air to the hearth. The gases pass to the inner annulus of the double-jacketed cylinder and leave it near the top. This utilises blocks of wood with a very high thermal efficiency and entirely trouble free operation. The outside of the cylinder remains cool enough not to damage a coat of paint or cause burns in case of manual contact.
