Abstract
A method of separating relatively magnetic particles from relatively non-magnetic particles comprising allowing a mixture of the magnetic and non-magnetic particles to fall, under at least the influence of gravity in a three dimensional stream in a common path closely adjacent to a wall of a channel nearest the magnet which is arranged and designed to produce a strong magnetic field force in a horizontal direction, the horizontal component being greater than that of the vertical component which is less than that of gravity, the free fall of the particles being interrupted as they pass adjacent the magnet to cause them to move away from the magnet thereafter the magnetic particles move back towards the magnet whereas the non-magnetic particles are not drawn away from their diverted path. The invention also applies to a magnetic separator having means to divert the particles away from the magnet.
