Abstract

To form holes of small diameter, a drill includes a single cutting insert 25 having an end active edge portion with two oppositely facing cutting edges 51,52. When the drill is rotated, one cutting edge of the insert cuts the centre portion C of the hole while the oppositely facing cutting edge cuts the peripheral portion B of the hole. One cutting edge forms the intersection of one insert face with the active edge, the other cutting edge forming the intersection of the active edge with the opposite insert face. Clearance faces 61,62 extend in opposite directions from the respective edges. The edges may be staggered, extend in a single line or be slightly mutually angled. Each edge may comprise two mutually angled edge parts. <IMAGE>
