Abstract

A device 7 for sealing a gap (d) between two members (1, 2) linearly shiftable in one another, such as a cylinder and piston or piston rod in a piston and cylinder assembly, has a sealing body (8) sealing the gap and being disposed in a groove (3) in the one member (1), a reinforcement 9 and a supporting ring 10, the bottom surface (4) of the groove being inclined in relation to the direction of shift. The sealing body (8) is biased in the groove (3) both in the direction of shift and at right angles to this direction. A member may be placed in a rectangular sectioned groove to provide the inclined bottom surface. The groove may be "open" as shown so that the sealing device can be mounted manually. A pair of such devices in mirror image relationship may be combined to form a sealing arrangement. <IMAGE>
