Abstract

The brake drum (10) of an internal expanding shoe brake has a conventional true cylindrical internal periphery (11) but its outer periphery (12) varies in radial distance from the central axis (24) so as to cause progressive variations in the radial wall thickness of the drum. There is an odd number of thickenings (14-18), preferably three or five of them, regularly spaced round the drum. The purpose of the variation of radial thickness is to silence the brake. <IMAGE>
