Abstract

1519108 Regulating supercharged IC engines SAAB-SCANIA AB 17 Dec 1976 52694/76 Heading F1B A vehicle Otto-cycle I.C. engine 1 has an exhaust-gas-driven turbocharger with a waste-gate by-pass duct 34 around the turbine. Valve 5 which controls flow through the by-pass is actuated by diaphragm 61, when exhaust gas pressure in chamber 62 overcomes the force of spring 66. The dimensions are such that boost pressure increases with increasing engine speed up to the speed at which maximum torque is developed and thereafter boost pressure decreases by at least 2 mm Hg/100 r.p.m. with increasing engine speed. Torque is increased throughout the middle range of operation and maximum power is increased by 20%. Combustion air is tapped by pipe 77 to cool and clean valve spindle 55. An air measuring device 23 controls the amount of fuel injected through nozzles 27. A catalytic reactor 32 may be provided.
