Abstract

1526461 Aromatic hydrocarbons MOBIL OIL CORP 14 June 1976 [2 July 1975 (2)] 24528/76 Heading C5E A feed comprising at least two aliphatic compounds of the formula Cn H m-2p ÀpH 2 O is transformed into a product containing aromatic hydrocarbons by contact at 500-1200‹ F., 0-3000 p.s.i.g., 0À5-50 LHSV with a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio of 12-3000 and a constraint index (defined) of 1-12, where for a molar excess of the feed the quantity n-2p/n > 1 while for the balance of the feed said quantity is #1. The molar excess may comprise a monohydric alcohol, ether, ketone, carboxylic acid ester and/or a C 3+ aldehyde. The balance of the feed may comprise a carboxylic acid, polyhydric alcohol, carbohydrate, carboxylic acid anhydride and/or C 1 -C 2 aldehydes. A preferred feed comprises methanol, in molar excess, and acetic acid, which mixture may be prepared by reaction of methanol with CO at 300-800‹ F. in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst, such as Rh promoted with iodine. The methanol and CO may themselves be generated by reaction of CO and H 2 at 450-750‹ F. over a methanol synthesis catalyst such as Zn and/or Cu.
