Abstract

1502323 Separating aromatic hydrocarbons from mixtures UNION CARBIDE CORP 4 Feb 1975 [5 Feb 1974] 4662/75 Heading C5E Aromatic hydrocarbons boiling in the range 80-175‹ C. are recovered from a feed 1 by contacting at 100-200‹ C. and 6-14À5 atmospheres in an extraction column 3 with a mixture of water and a water-miscible organic solvent, having a boiling point of at least 200‹ C., and with reflux hydrocarbons to provide an extract 19 comprising aromatic hydrocarbons, solvent and water and a raffinate 5 comprising aliphatic hydrocarbons. The extract 19 is separated in a distillation zone 23, with flash and fractionation utilizing steam, into an overhead distillate 18, comprising a water phase 31 and a hydrocarbon phase 18, which is recycled as reflux to the bottom of the extraction zone 3, a side stream comprising an aromatics phase 26 and a water phase 37, and a bottoms 14, comprising solvent and water, which is recycled to the top of the extraction zone. All or a portion 33 of the water phase 31 is washed at 39 with a slip stream 14, comprising at least 95 wt. per cent of aromatic hydrocarbons and equal in weight to 0À1 to 5% of the aromatics in the feed 1, to remove aliphatics from the water. The used slip stream is recycled to the feed 1 as the stream 16 and the purified water phase 43 is used to wash the aromatics phase 26 at 44. The raffinate 5 is washed at 7 and 8 with process water 20 and 96 respectively to provide an aliphatic raffinate product and one or more solvent-containing raffinate water phases 20a which are recycled to the mid-point of the extraction zone. The extraction solvent can be N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, acetamide, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, diethanolamine, para-cresol or metacresol.
