Abstract

1463782 Flash-spinning fibres SOLVAY & CIE 17 Jan 1975 [18 Jan 1974 12 July 1974 18 Oct 1974] 2105/75 Heading B5B In a process in which a two-phase liquid comprising molten polymer and solvent under pressure is converted into fibrils by a sudden reduction in pressure as it passes through an orifice, the flow-path of the material is disturbed at the moment at which it enters the orifice. This is preferably achieved by passing the mixture through a "perturbation chamber" 5 as illustrated in Fig. 1, wherein the mixture entering through supply orifice 7 spreads out as shown and re-converges at the extrusion orifice 2. This spreading process may be assisted by a gauze as shown in Fig. 9 (not shown), or by use of two divergent orifices 7 aiming the mixture at opposite sides of the chamber (Fig. 10-12, not shown). Different configurations of orifice are illustrated in Figs. 2-8 (not shown). By means of the apparatus shown in Fig. 12 a lubricant fluid may be introduced to the orifice via entrance 16 and annular exit 17. This assists in the elimination of pellets from the product. In Examples polyethylene and polypropylene fibres are produced.
