Abstract
1347740 Chlorine dioxide; chlorine HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP 31 Dec 1971 [22 Jan 1971] 61040/71 Heading C1A Chlorine dioxide and chlorine are produced by reacting an alkali metal chlorate with hydrochloric acid in aqueous solution, the reaction mixture containing: a catalyst which is at least one of vanadium pentoxide, silver ions, manganese ions, dichromate ions and arsenic ions; alkali metal chlorate of concentration 0À2 to 5 moles per litre; and hydrochloric acid of concentration 0À05 to 1À9 N; the temperature being 25‹ to 90‹ C. and the pressure 20-400 mm. Hg absolute. If desired the reaction solution may be saturated with alkali metal chloride, which may crystallize during the reaction to form a solid phase in contact with the aqueous reaction medium. Preferred concentrations for reactants are given, as are preferred concentrations of catalyst, and preferred pressures. The reaction may be operated continuously by feeding the reagents to a selected vessel and maintaining a constant volume of liquid reagent therein by evaporation, vapours and deposited solid being removed.
