Abstract

1435826 3,4 - Dichloro - 1 - butene and trans-1,4-dichloro-2-butene E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 3 Oct 1973 [4 Oct 1972] 46223/73 Heading C2C A mixture of 3,4-dichloro-1-butene and trans-1,4-dichloro-2-butene is obtained by contacting butadiene with Cl 2 with good agitation in a liquid medium at 0‹ to 120‹ C. while maintaining the concentration of butadiene at 0À05- 1-0 mole per kgm. of reactor solution, the molar ratio of dichlorobutenes to butadiene in the liquid phase not exceeding 30 : 1 and the process being carried out in the presence of a Clsource present in an amount such that the dissolved Clconcentration is 0À2 Î 10<SP>-3</SP> to 50 Î 10<SP>-3</SP> gm. ion per kgm. of reactor solution. The reaction is preferably carried out in a non-polar diluent such as CCl 4 and in the presence of a free radical inhibitor such as O 2 at a partial pressure of at least 1 mm.Hg at 35-90‹ C.
