Abstract
1488393 Pipe couplings; rivets RAYCHEM CORP 9 Oct 1974 [9 Oct 1973 (2)] 43684/74 Headings F2G and F2H [Also in Division B3] A coupling device comprises a first heat shrinkable or heat expansible member 10 made from a memory metal and a second, sleeve member 20 positioned respectively inside or outside member 10 so as to be in contact with member 10 or so as to be contacted by member 10 during the process of heat recovery forming a coupling between members such as pipes 21 and 22. The surface of the sleeve member 20 cooperating with member 10 may additionally have internal or external radially projecting teeth 23 of square or triangular cross-section to incise pipes 21, 22 upon recovery of member 10 or alternatively sleeve member 20 may be made of a gall-prone material such as titanium, aluminium, magnesium and zirconium which promote effects such as local welding of the interface between the components over and above normal frictional effects. The sleeve member 20 may also be weakened either by incorporating longitudinal slits or flats in the walls thereof or by tapering the thickness of the walls to promote selective collapse of the sleeve upon recovery of member 10. A further auxiliary sealing ring, which may itself incorporate teeth, be gall-prone or be coated to enhance sealing, may be inserted inside the sleeve. A rivet 86 has a hollow stem 87 forming a tubular section 88 to receive a heat recoverable driver 89, the stem 87 having a greater diameter adjacent the end cap than at its opening as shown before recovery in Fig. 14a. On reaching its transition temperature the driver 89 expands to complete the riveting operation as shown in Fig. 14b.
