Abstract

804,583. Pipe couplings. K.A.C, Ltd. April 5, 1957 [Jan. 6, 1956 ; May 28, 1956], Nos. 584/56 and 16504/56. Class 99(1). An end fitting for helically corrugated metal tubing 3 comprises a plug 1 having external, helical convolutions dimensioned and formed for threaded engagement with the internal corrugations of the tubing, and a ring 5, provided with internal, helical convolutions dimensioned and formed for threaded engagement with the external corrugations of the tubing and adapted to be screwed over the end of the tubing, the plug and ring being sealingly secured on the tubing with the inner ends thereof substantially aligned by expanding the plug and/or by swaging the ring thereby to trap the tubing between the plug and ring. The terminal convolutions at the aligned ends of the plug and ring are relieved, e.g. by progressively removing the peaks of such convolutions over the final quarter or half turns thereof, to provide clearance between the tubing and those ends when the fitting is sealed on the tubing. The plug may initially be solid and be bored out after the fitting has been assembled on to the tubing, or the plug may be hollow and a mandrel inserted into the bore of the plug to support the latter during swaging of the ring. As shown, the tube 3 has a braided reinforcement 9 which is gripped between a sleeve 8 and the ring 5, the latter having external serrations 11 and an annular extension 7 closely fitting over a shoulder 4 of the plug ; the sleeve and the ring are swaged down simultaneously. In a modification, a sealing washer 14, Fig. 2, is disposed in an annular recess formed between shoulders 4 and 15 of the plug 1 and ring 5 respectively, and the ring is furnished with a groove 16 into which the reinforcement 9 is urged by a projection 17 on the sleeve ; the end of the latter extends beyond the extension 7 of the ring and is deformed to form an inward flange 18 and thereby trap the extremity of the reinforcement against the end face of the extension.
