Description
Bar-shaped communication unit, and tachograph system having a communication unit
id="p-1"
[0001] The invention relates to a bar-shaped communication unit having an interface adapter component that can be connected to a tachograph and having a communication component, the interface adapter component and the communication component being detachably connected to one another in a Iongitudinai direction of the communication unit by means of a plug-in connection, the plug-in connection comprising an adapter interface of the interface adapter component and a communication component interface of the communication component. ln addition, the invention relates to a tachograph system having such a communication unit and having a tachograph.
id="p-2"
[0002] lt is known practice e.g. to equip a motor vehicle, in particular a commercial vehicle, with a tachograph in order to capture, inter alia, driver data relating to activities of a driver of the motor vehicle and/or trip data relating to the motor vehicle and to make said data available e.g. for supervisory activities. Tachographs may be prescribed, e.g. also on a country- and/or region-dependent basis, at least for specific motor vehicle classes and/or motor vehicle types, in order to allow authorities to supervise compliance with legal regulations - such as e.g. compliance with prescribed driving and resting times by the driver. Driver and trip data can also be used e.g. for efficiently and ecologically operating a vehicle fleet. By way of example, this can involve at least some of the data captured by the tachograph being transmitted for evaluation purposes via a radio link to a data processing device of a haulage firm employing the motor vehicle. E.g. such a purpose can be served by virtue of the tachograph having a communication unit connected to it.
id="p-3"
[0003] A communication unit connected to an interface on the front, a so-called front interface, of the tachograph is known. lf the communication unit is not needed, it is normally detached from the tachograph, for example in order to prevent theft or other loss of the communication unit. Both removing the communication unit from the tachograph and simply connecting the communication unit to the tachograph can result in undesirable strain on the front interface of the tachograph if the communication unit is removed or connected rashly and using force that exceeds aÉQÉ-fÉ-íš-ífïâäâ required extent. During rough operational use of the tachograph and the communication unit, in particular in commercial vehicles, however, such, possibly rash, use of force cannot be prevented in principle.
id="p-4"
[0004] The invention is therefore based on the object of providing a communication unit of the type cited at the outset that facilitates good theft prevention while simultaneously allowing the tachograph to be easily removed. The invention is also based on the object of providing a tachograph system having such a communication unit.
id="p-5"
[0005] The invention achieves the first-mentioned object by means of a communication unit of the type cited at the outset and by virtue of the plug-in connection comprising a magnetic connection between the interface adapter component and the communication component and by virtue of the adapter interface comprising at least one first connecting element of the magnetic connection and, on an outer side of the communication unit and in the longitudinal direction of the communication unit, a trapezoidal projection that engages in a corresponding trapezoidal recess in the communication component interface that is formed on the outer side of the communication unit, wherein the communication component interface comprises at least one second connecting element of the magnetic connection that corresponds with the first connecting element.
id="p-6"
[0006] A particular advantage of the communication unit according to the invention is that the communication component, which e.g. comprises the communication electronics and possibly a storage unit containing data, for example also containing driver- and/or trip-related data of the tachograph, can be removed easily and without significant mechanical strain on the tachograph, in particular on the front interface of the tachograph. lt is thus possible for the communication component, which, with its included communication electronics and with its possibly also included data memory, forms the essential value-containing element of the communication unit, to be easily protected against theft and e.g. safely kept on a driver of a motor vehicle comprising the tachograph. ln principle, it is conceivable for the communication unit to comprise one or more further elements besides the interface adapter component and the communication component. However, the communication unit preferably consists of the interface adapter component and the communication component.
id="p-7"
[0007] The invention easily allows the interface adapter component, which is used primarily to allow the communication unit and in particular the communication component to be connected to the tachograph easily and simply, to remain permanently on the tachograph as desired or needed (and e.g. to be removed merely in the case of hazardous goods shipments during so-called ADR (=Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route) operation). The interface adapter component is e.g. plugged into the front interface of the tachograph, which may be e.g. a six-pin interface on the front. The interface adapter component and, with it, the communication unit are therefore connected to the tachograph directly. However, it is also conceivable for example to connect the interface adapter component to the tachograph by means of an electrical connecting cable comprising e.g. a male connector that can be plugged into the front interface of the tachograph; in such a case, the interface adapter component and, with it, the communication unit are connected to the tachograph indirectly.
id="p-8"
[0008] The communication unit according to the invention is in bar-shaped form (the term "stick-shaped" is also conceivable as another name for "bar-shaped"), i.e. it is in elongate form and comprises a longitudinal axis and therefore also a longitudinal direction parallel to the longitudinal axis. The communication unit is thus particularly easy to handle and therefore advantageously contributes to making the communication component easier to remove. This is assisted by the fact that, according to the invention, the interface adapter component and the communication component are detachably connected to one another in a longitudinal direction of the communication unit, i.e. in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the communication unit, by means of the plug-in connection. The adapter interface and the communication component interface are preferably arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the communication unit.
id="p-9"
[0009] The magnetic connection present according to the invention as part of the plug-in connection, together with the trapezoidal projection on the outer side of the communication unit that engages in the trapezoidal recess, ensures that theÉQÉ-fÉ-íš-ífïâäâ plug-in connection connecting the communication component to the interface adapter component is reliably held together while simultaneously allowing this plug- in connection to be detached easily and in a manner that prevents damage when the communication component is removed.
id="p-10"
[0010] Advantageous further developments of the invention are indicated in the subclaims.
id="p-11"
[0011] Additionally increased robustness of the connection between the interface adapter component and the communication component, which is particularly advantageous especially during rough operational use of commercial vehicles, can preferably be achieved by virtue of, according to one development of the invention, the adapter interface comprising a second projection at a distance from the outer side of the communication unit and in the longitudinal direction of the communication unit, which second projection is overlapped by the communication component interface in the form of a sleeve. The communication component interface can overlap the second projection completely, i.e. over its complete extent, or just partially. According to this development, the communication component interface is therefore plugged and/or pushed onto the adapter interface.
id="p-12"
[0012] According to one advantageous development of the invention, the communication component interface abuts the second projection without play in a, i.e. in at least one, direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the communication unit. Additionally improved robustness and the ability of the communication component and the interface adapter component to be joined more easily and in a guided manner are thus achieved between the communication component interface and the adapter interface.
id="p-13"
[0013] According to another advantageous development of the invention, the adapter interface and the communication component interface each comprise electrical connecting elements that correspond with one another and are arranged nonsymmetrically with respect to the longitudinal axis of the communication unit. By way of example, the corresponding electrical connecting elements each form a plug- in contact. E.g. the adapter interface comprises a plurality of electrical connecting elements that are each in the form of a pin and form a multipole male connector, and the communication component interface comprises a plurality of electrical connecting elements that are each in the form of a sleeve and form a multipole female connector corresponding with the multipole male connector. lnstead of the sleeves, or the multipole female connector, there may also be provision on the communication component interface for respective electrical contact pads as electrical connecting elements, for example. E.g. electrical pins on the adapter interface can correspond with these contact pads, said pins then preferably being arranged on the adapter interface in a resilient manner. The nonsymmetrical arrangement of the electrical connecting elements in relation to the longitudinal axis of the communication unit means that rotation prevention is ensured when the communication component and the interface adapter component are joined.
id="p-14"
[0014] To allow the communication unit to be connected to a tachograph in a space-saving manner, it is particularly advantageous if, according to another development of the invention, the interface adapter component comprises a tachograph connection element arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the communication unit. The tachograph connection element is preferably also arranged perpendicularly in relation to the adapter interface.
id="p-15"
[0015] ln particular in order to allow the communication component to be easily removed when the communication unit is connected to the tachograph, it is advantageous if, according to one development of the invention, the tachograph connection element is arranged perpendicular to the trapezoidal projection of the adapter interface.
id="p-16"
[0016] According to another advantageous development of the invention, the second projection of the adapter interface comprises a bevel facing the tachograph connection element. This facilitates and assists tilting or tilt-removal of the communication component from the interface adapter component without mechanical strain on the tachograph and the tachograph connection element when the communication unit is connected to the tachograph.
id="p-17"
[0017] According to another advantageous development of the invention, the cross section of the communication unit is in the form of a rectangle having unequal sides, i.e. as a rectangle having two long and two short sides, and the trapezoidal projection of the adapter interface is arranged on a longitudinal side of the rectangle. Corresponding trapezoidal projections are preferably arranged on the two longitudinal sides of the rectangle. This makes the communication component and the interface adapter component easier to separate and join compared to if the trapezoidal projection, or the trapezoidal projections, is, or are, arranged on a, or on the two, short side/s of the rectangle, which is also conceivable in principle.
id="p-18"
[0018] This advantage can be enhanced further by virtue of, according to one advantageous development of the invention, the trapezium base of the trapezoidal projection being greater than the trapezium height and by virtue of the trapezium base being greater than half the length of the longitudinal side of the rectangle.
id="p-19"
[0019] Furthermore, a tachograph system having a communication unit as mentioned above and having a tachograph is proposed, wherein the communication unit is coupled rigidly to the tachograph, the longitudinal axis of the communication unit being arranged parallel to a front face of the tachograph. The front face preferably comprises operator control elements. ln the state in which it is installed in the tachograph, it is accessible to an operator. The installed state of the tachograph is a state of the tachograph in which it is installed in a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle, in particular a commercial vehicle. The tachograph is therefore an installed vehicle device, that is to say a device intended to be installed in a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle. The tachograph can have e.g. the so- called 1 DIN radio slot format.
id="p-20"
[0020] The communication unit preferably does not jut out from the front face of the tachograph, i.e. the communication unit does not protrude beyond the tachograph at the sides. The communication unit more preferably does not conceal a display that may be present in the front face of the tachograph. That is to say that the communication unit preferably also does not only partially conceal the display.
id="p-21"
[0021] The rigid coupling means that the communication unit is immobile and permanently coupled to the tachograph. This results in the communication unit being reliably kept on the tachograph, which is of particular importance during rough driving operation of a tachograph system installed in a commercial vehicle, for example. The tachograph preferably comprises a front interface into which the ÉQÉ-fÉ-íš-ífïâäâ communication unit, to be more precise the interface adapter component of the communication unit, specifically in particular a tachograph connection element- e.g. in the form of a male connector and integrated in the interface adapter component - of the interface adapter component, is plugged. When the communication component is removed or detached from the interface adapter component, the front interface is not under mechanical strain on account of the specific design of the communication unit that is described above. This ensures that the tachograph is permanently dependable.
id="p-22"
[0022] According to one advantageous development of the tachograph system, the tachograph has a printer device having a printed material receptacle that is removable from the front face of the tachograph, and the interface adapter component of the communication unit is designed in such a way that the printed material receptacle is removable from the communication unit without obstruction, i.e. without obstruction by the communication unit or the elements thereof, when the communication component of the communication unit is detached from the interface adapter component. The communication unit therefore does not obstruct removal of the printed material receptacle. The printed material receptacle is also referred to as the printer tray. On account of the interface adapter component designed according to this development of the invention, which is the element of the communication unit that is coupled to the tachograph directly, the printed material receptacle can be removed from the tachograph, namely from the front face thereof, freely and without impedance. This ensures simple refilling of printed material, which is a consumable for the tachograph, even in the case of the tachograph system that comprises the communication unit in principle. The interface adapter component can remain permanently on the tachograph.
id="p-23"
[0023] The invention also includes developments of the tachograph system according to the invention that comprise features which have already been described in connection with the communication unit according to the invention and the developments thereof. For this reason, the corresponding developments of the tachograph system according to the invention are not described here again.
id="p-24"
[0024] The invention also comprises the combinations of the features of the described developments and embodiments.ÉQÉ-fÉ-íš-ífïâäâ

[0025] Exemplary embodiments of a communication unit and a tachograph system are illustrated diagrammatically and schematically in the drawing and will be described in more detail below.
id="p-26"
[0026] ln the drawing, Figure 1 shows a front view of a communication unit, Figure 2 shows a side view of the communication unit from figure 1, Figure 3 shows a communication component interface of the communication unit shown in figure 1, Figure 4 shows an adapter interface of the communication unit shown in figure 1, Figures 5 and 6show a rear view of an interface adapter component and a communication component of the communication unit shown in figure 1, Figures 7 and 8show a view from below of the interface adapter component and the communication component from figures 5 and 6, Figures 9 and 10 show a front view of the interface adapter component and the communication component from figures 5 and 6, Figure 11 shows a tachograph system having a tachograph and a communication unit, Figure 12 shows a front view of the tachograph shown in figure 11 with an interface adapter component of the communication unit, Figure 13 shows a detail from a side view of the tachograph and the interface adapter component shown in figure 12, Figure 14 shows a further tachograph system having a tachograph and a communication unit, and Figure 15 shows an alternative tachograph system having a tachograph and a communication unit.
id="p-27"
[0027] ln all of the figures, respectively corresponding parts and elements are denoted by the same reference signs.
id="p-28"
[0028] Figure 1 shows a front view of a bar-shaped communication unit 1 having an interface adapter component 2 that can be connected to a tachograph and having ÉQÉ-fÉ-íš-ífïâäâ a communication component 4. By way of example, the communication component 4 comprises communication electronics, e.g. for data transmission between the tachograph and a server, and also a storage unit for buffer-storing data.
id="p-29"
[0029] The communication unit 1 comprises a longitudinal axis L. The interface adapter component 2 and the communication component 4 are detachabiy connected to one another in a longitudinal direction of the communication unit 1, i.e. in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis L of the communication unit 1, by means of a plug-in connection 6. The plug-in connection 6 comprises an adapter interface 8 of the interface adapter component 2 (cf. figure 4) and a communication component interface 10 of the communication component 4 (cf. figure 3).
id="p-30"
[0030] The plug-in connection 6 comprises a magnetic connection 12 (cf. figures14 and 15) between the interface adapter component 2 and the communication component 4. The adapter interface 8 comprises two first connecting elements 14 (cf. figure 4) of the magnetic connection 12. The communication component interface 10 comprises two second connecting elements 16 (cf. figure 3) of the magnetic connection 12 that correspond with the two first connecting elements 14. The connecting elements 14, 16 can be e.g. paired permanent magnets having opposite polarity or for example permanent magnets and elements having ferromagnetic properties.
id="p-31"
[0031] Moreover, the adapter interface 8 comprises a trapezoidal projection 18 oriented in the longitudinal direction of the communication unit 1. The trapezoidal projection 18 engages in a corresponding trapezoidal recess 20 in the communication component interface 10, formed on the outer side of the communication unit
id="p-32"
[0032] ln the side view of the communication unit 1 shown in figure 2, it can be seen in conjunction with figure 4 that the interface adapter component 2 comprises a tachograph connection element 22 that is arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis L of the communication unit 1 and is integrated in the interface adapter component 2 (i.e. forms a single part with the interface adapter component 2). The tachograph connection element 22 is also arranged perpendicular to the trapezoidal projection 18 of the adapter interface ÉQÉ-fÉ-íš-ífïâäâ
id="p-33"
[0033] The adapter interface 8 has a second projection 24 at a distance from the outer side of the communication unit 1 and in the Iongitudinal direction of the communication unit 1 (cf. figures 5, 7 and 9). This second projection 24, which is provided on the interface adapter component 2 in addition to the trapezoidal first projection 18 described above, is overlapped by the communication component interface 10 (cf. figure 3) of the communication component 4 (cf. figures 6, 8 and ) in the form of a s|eeve.
id="p-34"
[0034] ln a direction perpendicu|ar to the longitudinal axis L of the communication unit 1, the communication component interface 10 abuts the second projection 24 without play. The communication unit 1 thus comprises a stable unit when the interface adapter component 2 and the communication component 4 are in the joined state. ln the exemplary embodiment shown here, the communication component interface 10 moreover overlaps the second projection 24 almost completely, i.e. almost over the complete extent of the projection 24, without play.
id="p-35"
[0035] The adapter interface 8 and the communication component interface 10 each comprise electrical connecting elements 26, 28 that correspond with one another and are arranged nonsymmetrically with respect to the Iongitudinal axis L of the communication unit 1. ln the exemplary embodiment shown here, the adapter interface 8 comprises six such electrical connecting elements 26 and the communication component interface 10 comprises six electrical connecting elements 28 corresponding therewith.
id="p-36"
[0036] As can be seen in particular in figures 5 and 7, the second projection 24 of the adapter interface 8 comprises a bevel 30 facing the tachograph connection element 22. This bevel 30 makes it easier to remove the communication component 4 from the interface adapter component 2 in particular when the interface adapter component 2 is connected to a tachograph, i.e. when, in the present exemplary embodiment, the tachograph connection element 22 is plugged e.g. into a front interface of a tachograph.
id="p-37"
[0037] The communication unit 1 and, with it, the adapter interface 8 and also the communication component interface 10 are in the form of a rectangle having unequal sides in cross section (cf. e.g. figures 3 and 4). The trapezoidal projection ÉQÉ-fÉ-íš-ífïâäâ 18 of the adapter interface 8 is arranged on a longitudinal side of the rectangle (cf. figure 4 in conjunction with figure 1). The trapezoidal projection 18 is a flat, broad projection, which is reflected in that the trapezium base a of the trapezoidal projection 18 is greater than the trapezium height h and in that the trapezium base a is greater than half the length b/2 of the longitudinal side of the rectangle (the whole length is denoted by the reference sign b in figure 1).
id="p-38"
[0038] Figure 11 shows a tachograph system 32 having a communication unit 1 and having a tachograph 34. The communication unit 1 is coupled rigidly to the tachograph 34, the longitudinal axis L of the communication unit 1 being arranged parallel to a front face 36 (cf. figure 13) of the tachograph 34. An interface adapter component 2 of the communication unit 1, specifically in particular a tachograph connection element - which is concealed in this representation - of the interface adapter component 2, is plugged into a front interface of the tachograph 34 in order to couple the communication unit 1 to the tachograph
id="p-39"
[0039] lt can be seen that the communication unit 1 does not jut out from the front face 36 of the tachograph 34, i.e. does not protrude beyond said face at the sides. Furthermore, the communication unit 1 does not conceal a display 38 arranged in the front face 36 of the tachograph 34 and also does not conceal operator control elements of the tachograph 34 - which are arranged below the display 38 in the exemplary embodiment shown here.
id="p-40"
[0040] The tachograph 34 has a printer device having a printed material receptacle 40 that can be removed from the front face 36 (cf. figure 12). Figure 12 shows the tachograph system 32, the communication component 4 of the communication unit 1 having been removed. Only the interface adapter component 2 of the communication unit 1 continues to be connected to the tachograph 34, specifically here plugged into a front interface (which is concealed by the interface adapter component 2 in the views in figures 11 and 12)of the tachograph 34. Figure 12 makes it clear that the interface adapter component 2 of the communication unit 1 is designed such that when the communication component 4 of the communication unit 1 is detached from the interface adapter component 2 the printed material receptacle 40 is freely accessible and therefore removable from the tachographwithout impedance.

[0041] A similar tachograph system 32 is also shown in figure 14. Figure 15 shows an alternative tachograph system 32 in which a communication unit 1 with its interface adapter component 2 is not plugged into a front interface of a tachograph 34 directly, but rather wherein the interface adapter component 2 and therefore the communication unit 1 are connected to the tachograph 34 in such a way that the interface adapter component 2 is connected to a male connector 44 via a cable connection 42. The male connector 44 is plugged into the front interface of the tachograph
