Abstract
Method for producing an ausferritic steel or an ausferritic ductile iron, which comprises the steps of subjecting a steel alloy having a silicon content of 1.5-4.4 wt% Si and a carbon content of 0.3-0.8 wt% C, or a ductile iron having a silicon content of 2.0-4.6 wt% Si and a carbon content of 2.9-3. 8 wt% C, to an austempering heat treatment comprising the following steps: austenitizing said steel alloy or ductile iron, quenching said steel alloy or ductile iron at a cooling rate that is sufficiently high to prevent predominant formation of proeutectoid ferrite or pearlite, transforming austenite in said quenched steel alloy or ductile iron into an ausferritic structure, and subsequently baking said steel alloy or ductile iron at one or more temperatures to complete said transformation of any remaining austenite into ausferrite, to equalize the carbon distribution within its austenite phase, and to temper any martensite that has formed, to produce an ausferritic steel or an ausferritic ductile iron having a microstructure containing at least 50 volume-% of ausferrite with superior properties at a substantially lower process cost.
