Abstract

[Also in Division F2] Apparatus for uniformly advancing a multilayer web to a cutter or other machine is provided with a feeding device arranged to present a flattened, cushioned, contact surface to the web so that relative longitudinal movement between individual layers of the web does not take place during the feed operation. As shown, the feeding device comprises a pair of rollers 4, each provided with peripheral axial splines 5 which co-operate with the splines 6 provided on the inner surface of a resilient jacket 7 surrounding the roll, the relative diameters of roller 4 and jacket 7 being such that a space 8 is left between the splines 5 and 6. This space 8 communicates with the hollow interior of the roller 4, which interior is connected to a supply of compressed air, and acts as an air cushion so that the rollers 4 present the desired contact surface to the web when it passes between them (Fig. 3, not shown). The jacket 7 may be of rubber, synthetic resin or the like, and may have reinforcing threads of nylon; it is attached to the ends of the roller by tension wires (Fig. 4 not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the feeding device is constituted by a pair of endless belts 23, 24 each driven by a pair of rollers 25, 25, 26, 26 respectively, each rollerbelt arrangement being provided with lateral sealing plates 27 or 28, the hollow space thus formed being connected to a compressed air supply so that it acts as an air cushion. In a further embodiment (Figs. 7 and 9, not shown) pressure loading of the appropriate sections of the belts 23 or 24 is effected by compressed air issuing from air tables located between the rollers.
