Abstract
1,143,577. Carboxylic acids and olefin oxides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 June, 1966 [9 June, 1965; 5 Aug., 1965], Nos. 24403/65 and 33575/65. Heading C2C. In a continuous process for the co-production of carboxylic acids and alkylene oxides, a C 2-8 aldehyde and an aliphatic olefin and molecular oxygen are continuously fed into a solvent maintained at above 150‹ C., liquid is continuously withdrawn from the reaction mixture and alkylene oxide and carboxylic acid recovered therefrom and that fraction of the remaining liquid which boils at at least 40‹ C. at 20 mm. Hg is recycled. The solvent is defined as comprising products of the reaction which boil at at least 40‹ C. at 20 mm. Hg. The preferred reactants are acetaldehyde and propylene. The solvent may comprise olefine carbonates, dioxolanes and esters derived from dibasic and monobasic acids and glycols corresponding to the olefine oxides produced in the reaction. A saturated aliphatic C 3-10 hydrocarbon may be added to the solvent mixture. It is preferred to initiate the reaction by, e.g., U.V. light or free radical initiators or salts of metals with variable valency.
