Abstract

1,260,927. Esters. WACKER-CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 27 March, 1969 [1 April, 1968], No. 16120/69. Heading C2C. In a continuous process for the preparation of esters from water-insoluble C 4 -C 6 alkanols and aliphatic carboxylic acids (2-4C) in the presence of a cation exchange resin the stoichiometric amounts of alcohol and carboxylic acid are used, the esterification is carried out at not above 90‹ C. with the resin in the form of a packing material with a large surface area arranged in a column so that a layer of inert packing material is above and below the resin, and the ester is continuously removed. Resins based on styrene, phenolic, acrylic and vinyl resins containing active sulphonic and/or carboxyl groups may be used and Raschig rings may be in the inert upper and lower sections of the column. Examples describe the preparation of butyl acetate, 2-ethylbutylpropionate, and n-hexylpropionate.
