1318524 Oxidation of propylene PETROCARBON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 29 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 47857/69 Addition to 1237884 Heading C2C Propylene oxide is produced by a process comprising oxidizing isopropyl alcohol with oxygen or an oxygen-containing mixture in the liquid phase at elevated temperature and at a pressure sufficient to maintain the isopropyl alcohol in the liquid phase to produce a solution of a reaction product in isopropyl alcohol, replacing the isopropyl alcohol with the simultaneous removal of at least the major portion of acetone from the reaction product (comprising isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, acetone and any ester produced) with an ester solvent for the hydrogen peroxide having the formula RCOOR<SP>1</SP> in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are C 1 - C 5 alkyl groups optionally substituted by at least one electrophilic group, reacting the resulting hydrogen peroxide solution with at least one carboxylic acid R 1 COOH in which R 1 is hydrogen, phenyl, or a C 1 -C 5 alkyl group optionally substituted by at least one electrophilic group, thus producing a percarboxylic acid solution, removing any water by azeotropic distillation, and reacting the resulting anhydrous percarboxylic acid solution with propylene to give propylene oxide. When the ester solvent forms an azeotrope with the isopropyl alcohol the azeotrope must have a lower boiling point than the ester solvent and when the ester does not form an azeotrope with isopropyl alcohol the ester must have a higher boiling point than isopropyl alcohol. The process is carried out in the absence of heavy metal ions. There may be formed propylene glycol and propylene glycol ester in addition to the propylene oxide. The preferred ester solvent is n-propyl acetate and the preferred acid is acetic acid.
