Abstract

1,254,927. Aromatic-alcohols by reduction of esters. NIPPON MINING CO. Ltd. 24 March, 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 15328/69. Heading C2C. Esters of aromatic carboxylic acids are reduced to the corresponding aromatic methylol compound by treatment with hydrogen above 80‹ C. and at a pressure above 60 kg/cm.<SP>2</SP> in the presence of a catalyst consisting of CuO supported on an oxide, carbonate or oxide-carbonate mixture of Mg, Ca, Sr and/or Ba, such that the catalyst contains 0À01 to 3À0 atoms of copper per atom of the metal in the support. Comparative examples describe the reduction of methyl ethyl or isopropyl benzoate to benzyl alcohol, toluene being mentioned as a byproduct. Example 10 describes the reduction of p-toluic acid ethyl ester to p-methylbenzyl alcohol and Examples 11-14 describe the conversion of phthalates to p-(hydroxymethyl) methyl or ethyl benzoate.
