Abstract

Compounds of formula <FORM:0998978/C2/1> or <FORM:0998978/C2/2> where Rf11 is perfluoroalkyl or omega-hydroperfluoroalkyl, Rf1 is perfluoroalkylene and <FORM:0998978/C2/3> is a carboxylic acid group or carboxylic acid derivative group are prepared by reacting hexafluoropropylene oxide with a fluorocarbon acid fluoride and, if desired, converting the resulting acid fluoride to another carboxylic acid derivative. Those compounds in which Rf11 is perfluoroalkylene of 1, 2, 4 or more carbon atoms or omega-hydroperfluoroalkyl with at least 4 carbon atoms and the compounds containing Rf1 are claimed per se. The group <FORM:0998978/C2/4> may represent acid fluoride, free acid, alkali metal salt of the acid, ester, amide or acrylamide. Suitable acid fluorides for reaction with hexafluoropropylene oxide include carbonyl fluoride, acid fluorides of perfluoro- and omega-hydroperfluoralkanoic acids and diacid fluorides of oxalic acid or perfluorinated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. The reaction may be effected in the absence of a solvent using activated carbon as catalyst or in the presence of a strongly polar solvent and of a fluoride of an alkali metal, silver or a quaternary ammonium radical, optionally mixed with other alkali metal halides.
