Abstract

11b -Hydroxy-17a -lower alkanoyloxy esters of the pregnane series are obtained by treating an 11b -trihaloacetoxy-17a -lower alkanoyloxy ester of the pregnane series in a lower alkanol with a salt of an acid having a pKa falling within the range of about 2.3 and about 7.3 whereby the 11b -trihaloacetoxy grouping is selectively solvolysed to a free hydroxy group. Suitable salts are the sodium or potassium salts of hydrazoic acid, formic acid or trifluoroacetic acid. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-inflammatory activity and containing the above compounds are administered topically.
