Abstract

1,149,289. Polymeric compositions for treating textiles. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 22 Sept., 1967 [24 Sept., 1966], No. 43275/67. Headings C3P, C3R and C3T. [Also in Division D1] Aqueous liquors suitable for finishing textiles comprise (i) a polymer or copolymer prepared from a vinyl or divinyl monomer or monomers (the term "vinyl" being used to mean CH 2 = CH- or CH 2 = C(CH 3 )-groups), (ii) a reaction product containing isocyanate groups prepared from (a) an organic compound of molecular weight 500-10,000 carrying at least two active hydrogen atoms (i.e. a hydrogen atom which is replaceable by sodium) and/or (b) an organopoly siloxane of molecular weight up to 25,000 carrying at least two active hydrogen atoms; and (c) a polyisocyanate, (iii) 0À1 to 10 g/litre of a water-soluble salt of a metal of Group I B , II B or VIII of the Periodic Table (the first two groups being the Cu-Ag-Au and Zn-Cd-Hg groups respectively) and a mono- or poly-carboxylic acid having up to 5 carbon atoms, and optionally (iv) 0À5-5 g/litre of a surface-active agent. The polymer (i) preferably contains groups capable of reacting with isocyanates. Component (iii) is preferably a zinc salt, e.g. zinc acetate or propionate; copper acetate is also exemplified. Suitable surface-active agents (iv) include ionic compounds such as sodium paraffin sulphonates, sodium alkylarylsulphonates and higher aliphatic alcohol sulphates, and nonionic compounds such as hydroxyethylation products of long chain alkyl-phenols. In examples, the vinyl polymers used are nbutyl acrylate-styrene-acrylamide copolymers and the isocyanate-containing products used are those obtained by reacting (a) polypropylene glycol (molecular weight about 3000) with hexamethylene-diisocyanate, (b) an organo polysiloxane of the formula HO-CH 2 Si(CH 3 ) 2 -[-O-Si(CH 3 ) 2 -] n15 -OSi(CH 3 ) 2 -CH 2 OH with hexamethylene diisocyanate, and (c) a polythioether with hexamethylene diisocyanate, the polythioether being the reaction product of thiodiglycol and 2,2-dimethylpropanediol-(1,3) and having a molecular weight of 1900. Other components included in the examples are ethyl acetate, glycollic acid, stannous chloride, dibutyl tin dilaurate, dimethylol-dihydroxyethylene urea and magnesium chloride. The textiles treated with the above aqueous liquors are then aftertreated either with steam at 100-110‹ C. or with water at 10-100‹ C.
