Abstract

Quinolinol esters are added to lubricating oils containing compounds of metals other than alkali metals to bind the metals as quinolinates. The preferred esters are those of 2-ethyl hexoic, myristic, palmitic, stearic and other higher fatty acids which are not subject to oxidation. The amount of ester added is normally in the range 0.02-0.2% by weight of the oil. The esters may also be added to coating compositions to combine with compounds of metals other than alkali metals to form a coating composition which is mildew-proof. In an example, aquinolinol ester is added to a wire-coating composition containing linseed oil, zinc oxide and rubber.ALSO:A quinolate (oxinate) of a metal other than an alkali metal is prepared by reacting an ester of a hydroxyquinoline in the absence of water with a compound of a metal other than an alkali metal. The reaction may be carried out in solution in an organic solvent at elevated temperature. The esters used as starting materials are prepared by conventional methods. The acids from which the esters are formed may be a saturated or unsaturated mono- or polycarboxylic acid, e.g. formic, acetic, propionic, octoic, undecylic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachidic, undecylinic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, palmitoleic, maleic, fumaric, succinic, glutaric, sebacic, phthalic, cinnamic, aconitic benzoic, phenylacetic, phenylpropionic, naphthenic, glycollic, citric, tartartaric, salicylic, and acetylsalicylic acid. The acids may also be those derived from naturally occurring oils and fats. The metal compounds used may be the salts of those acids used to form the esters or of other organic or inorganic acids. The compounds may alternatively be enolates. A mixture of compounds of different metals may be used. Suitable metals for use in the formation of the quinolinolates are, e.g. aluminium, beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, lead, zinc, mercury, tin, iron, nickel, cobalt, manganese, chromium, copper, cadmium, silver and thallium. The metals may be present in their higher or lower valency states where they have more than one valency state. The esters of substituted quinolinols, e.g. esters of 4 - methyl- 8 - hydroxy-; 4 - methyl - 2 - hydroxy-; 2-methyl-4-hydroxy-; 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxy; 5,7-dibromo-8-hydroxy-; 5,7-diiodo-8-hydroxy-; 5-ethyl-7-bromo-8-hydroxy; 4-cyano-8-hydroxy-; 7-cyano-8-hydroxy- and 2-amino-8-hydroxy-quinolines may be used as starting materials although the preferred ester are those of 8-hydroxy-quinoline.ALSO:Metal quinolindates of metals other than alkali metals are used to treat fabrics, e.g. cotton, to make them mildew proof. The fabric is treated with a mixture of a quinolester and a compound of the metal concerned in an organic solvent and the quinolinolate is formed in situ. An example is given of the mildew proofing of cotton fabric by treating it with a solution of 8-quinolyl-2-ethyl-hexoate and copper octoate in mineral spirits thus depositing copper quinolinolate in the fabric.
