Pulp is alternately (a) fed to a column 1 through an inlet 4 (with upward movement of a piston 7) while stationary pulp in the column is washed with liquid passing transversely from an annular intake screen 2 to an annular extract screen and (b) moved through a portion of the column (by downward movement of piston 7) with removal of a corresponding amount of washed pulp through a pipe 5.
