Abstract

A method of sorting and cutting timber comprises measuring and recording at least the top end dimensions of barked or debarked logs, combining in each sorting frame 11 logs of predetermined top end dimensions, differing by at least half an inch, the number of different top end dimensions in each sorting frame corresponding to the number of cutting lines 18, and transporting the logs, if necessary after debarking, to the cutting lines in such a way that the logs of each dimension are fed to the cutting line equipped to deal with logs of that dimension, and cutting the timber. After measuring by means such as photoelectric cells the logs are transported on a conveyer 8 to the appropriate sorting frames 11A, 11B into which they are deflected by means 12 on the conveyer actuated by the measuring means. Each group of top end dimensions designated to a particular sorting frame comprises relatively large and small dimensions so as to give a uniform total yield of cut timber from the cutting lines. The sorting frames are emptied one by one onto conveyer 14 either to the conveyers 16, 17 and saw line 18 or to the barker 15 and then to the sorting frames 22.
