Abstract

1,079,049. Woodworking. WEYERHAEUSER CO. Oct. 8, 1964 [Oct. 10, 1963], No. 41081/64. Headmg B5L. An in-line veneer production process comprises peeling logs into veneer, conveying the veneer to storage trays, conveying the veneer from the trays into a veneer dryer, and drying the veneer in the dryer. The logs 4 are initially fed by a conveyer 5 and handling equipment 7 to a lathe 8 at a peeling station 3 where they are placed in line with chucks 9 by calipers 10. A knife 11 peels veneer from the logs which rotate at varying speeds so that the veneer 18 is produced at a constant speed. The initial discontinuous veneer caused by the irregular shape of the log is conveyed by a gate 14 to a waste shoot 15. The veneer 18 is fed by tipples 19 to a storage section 20 having upper and lower sections 21, 22 of storage trays each of which consists of a conveyer belt which moves until it is completely full, the tipple 19 then being moved to direct the veneer to the next tray. The stored veneer is discharged as required by conveyers 24 to a section 30 where unusable veneer is cut and discharged to a waste conveyer 35 by clippers 31, 32. From the section 30, the veneer is then transferred by conveyers 38 to a second storage section having upper and lower sections 41, 42 of storage trays similar to the section 20. Conveyers 45, 46 to further conveyers 51, 52 in a feed section 50 which pass the veneer to a drier 60 having upper and lower conveyers 66, 67. The conveyers 51, 52 are so operated that there is an unbroken line of veneer passing through the drier. From the drier, the veneers pass through a cooling section 63 to a section 70 having moisture meters and markers 71, 72 which sense the moisture content of the veneer and, if above a predetermined content, mark the veneer to indicate to an operator at clippers 75, 77 which veneer is satisfactory and which requires further drying, the latter then being reintroduced to the drier by means of a feeder 54 or to the storage trays 40 by a conveyer 37. The operator cuts the veneer with the clippers to the correct size, the cut sheets then passing to a table for sorting into stacks 80. During its travel, the grain of the veneer is transverse to its direction of movement. The peeled veneer both from the outer portion or the inner portion of the log may be passed from the peeler through whichever line of the drier is convenient, or, the outer portion may go through one line and the inner portion go through the other line.
