Abstract

The invention comprises nitrofuran derivatives of the formula: <FORM:0966832/C1/1> wherein Z is a heterocyclic ring containing two or more herero atoms of which at least one is a tertiary nitrogen atom, which ring may also be substituted or may fused to a further ring system; and the N-oxides, quaternary ammonium compounds and acid addition salts thereof; and a process for their preparation comprising condensing 5-nitrofurfural with an alkyl substituted heterocyclic compound of the formula H3C-Z. Examples of heterocyclic compounds from which the substituent Z can be derived are the pyridazines, pyrimidines, pyrazines, triazines, oxazoles, thiazoles, pyrazoles, triazoles, thiadiazoles, benzothiazoles and imidazopyridazines. Substituents which may be present in the heterocyclic ring are, for example, halogen atoms, or nitro, amino, acylamino, sulphonylamino, hydroxy, acyloxy or alkoxy radicals. The compounds have bacteriostatic and fungicidal activity. 3-Methyl -6- methylmercapto-pyridazine is prepared by reacting 3-methyl -6- chloropyridazine with methyl mercaptan in the presence of sodium. 3-Methyl-6(dimethylol-methylamino) - pyridazine, 3-methyl -6- (b , a -dihydroxy -npropoxy)-pyridazine, 3-methyl -6- (b -hydroxyethylamino)-pyridazine and 3-methyl -6- (b -hydroxymethoxy)-pyridazine are prepared by reacting a mixture of 3-methyl -6- chloropyridazine and 3-methyl -6- bromopyridazine with 2-amino-propan-1, 3-diol monosodium glycerine, monoethanolamine and ethylene glycol respectively. 3-Methyl -6- methylsulphonylamido-pyridazine is prepared by reacting 6-amino -3- methyl-pyridazine with methane sulphochloride and hydrolysing the resulting 3-methyl -6- (bis-methylsulphonyl)-amino-pyridazine.
