Abstract
1,109,407. Encapsulating powders. M. K. MEHTA. 1 Feb., 1967 [22 Feb., 1966], No. 7828/66. Headings B8C and B8N. A dispensing apparatus for powdered materials comprises a hopper 10, drum 14 having openings 16 in its periphery, a sheet 17 of elastic material covering the openings and a restraining sleeve 18 fitting over the drum with apertures corresponding with the openings 16, and means for applying suction to the openings 16 to draw in the elastic material so as to form pockets 22 and for releasing the suction to cause ejection of the charges at a discharge position b. As described, the openings 16 are arranged in staggered axial rows on the drum surface, Fig. 2 (not shown). Valve plates 32 engage the axial faces of the drum and apply vacuum to a channel 33 whereby pockets 22 are formed at position a. During the anticlockwise rotation of the drum, a retaining sheet 23 closes the mouths of pockets 22, and at position b, pressure is applied through passages (35), 21 to eject the powdered charge to a half-capsule 24, the capsules then being formed as described in Specifications 957,840 and 881,022. The charge may be compressed while in the pocket 22. Fig. 3 (not shown) reveals an arrangement where, prior to passing under the retaining sheet 23, the charge is compressed between a resiliently loaded backing plate (42) flush with the drum surface, and the elastic pocket base forced outward by compressed air. In Fig. 5 (not shown), compression occurs after emerging from sheet 23 but before discharge, and against a surface of a mounting block for the sheet. The volume of the pockets may be altered by varying the suction pressure. The invention may be applied to filling bottles, ampoules, packets &c.
