Abstract

1,164,590. Bleaching pulp. BILLERUDS A.B. 12 Nov., 1968 {30 Nov., 1967], No. 53583/68. Heading D1P. Unbleached wood pulp for use in the production of rayon pulp is bleached by subjecting the pulp to an incomplete bleaching with elementary chlorine to leave a residue of lignin in the pulp and removing the residual lignin by bleaching the pulp with chlorine dioxide or a hypochlorite, e.g. sodium or calcium hypochlorite. The incomplete bleaching with chlorine preferably leaves a residual content of lignin in the pulp of 0.1-0.2% by weight. The chlorine may be added to the pulp in the exact quantity required for delignifying the pulp while leaving 0.1-0.2% by weight of lignin in the pulp or the chlorine may be added in a quantity higher than that required for complete delignification and the excess chlorine removed, e.g. by washing the pulp with water and/or adding an alkali to the pulp, while there is still a small quantity of lignin present in the pulp. If chlorine dioxide is the secondary bleaching agent this can be added to the pulp together with the elementary chlorine, the ligrain being mainly attacked by the chlorine and when all the chlorine has been consumed the residual lignin being attacked by the chlorine dioxide, but if a hypochlorite is used as the secondary bleaching agent this must be applied after the treatment with elementary chlorine. The natural resin in the bleached pulp may be chlorinated to less than 12% by weight, defined as the percentage of chlorine of the solid resinous material soluble in ethanol. Suitable bleaching apparatus comprises a first bleaching tower 1, alkalization tower 3 and second and third bleaching towers 5 and 7, washers 2, 4, 6 and 8 being supplied after each tower and water supplied to the washers through tubes 9 being withdrawn through tubes 10. Unbleached pulp is supplied to tower 1 through tube 11 and bleached pulp withdrawn through tube 12. For controlling the processes in the towers samples can be taken through tubes 17, 18, 19 and 20. Chlorine, or chlorine and chlorine dioxide, is supplied to tower 1 through tube 13, sodium hydroxide is supplied to tower 3 through tube 14, hypochlorite is supplied to tower 5 through tube 15 and hypochlorite or chlorine dioxide is supplied to tower 7 through tube 16. The temperature in tower 3 may be 40‹-100‹C and in towers 5 and 7 40‹-60‹C. If it is not desired to wash the pulp between towers 5 and 7 the washer 6 may be shunted by tube 21.
