Abstract
The invention relates to a semi-continuous cultivation process of the Spirulina platensis (Gomont) Geitler cyanobacteria, useful for the observation of protein-rich biomass and other valuable components for nutrition and therapeutics. The culture is made in a suitable pool containing the nutritional medium zarrouk , in which an algal suspension is inoculated in the exponential growth phase. The thickness of the suspension is 15 ... 20 cm, and the homogenization is accomplished by bubbling with compressed air or other mechanical means. The semicontinuous cultivation system installs once the optical density of 1.0 ... 1.2 units of extinction is reached and is characterized by maintaining the crop at the same optimal growth rate, the same biomass concentration and the same productivity, through a series of partial partial harvests, in the conditions of constant maintenance of the total volume of the suspension and of avoiding the nutritional limitation of the growth by the periodic addition of the essential nutrients. The process results in 2 to 3 times higher productivity than the "batch" cultivation system, in addition to operationality and extension of applicability, as well as to the superior and efficient utilization of nutrients in algal biomass.
