Abstract

Dentifrices with stability against discolouration upon aging contain as flavouring agent cinnamic aldehyde or citral and 0.1-5% of (1) a terpene or sesquiterpene colour stabilizer with trisubstituted double bonds e.g. limonene, ocimene, caryophyllene, citrus oils, clove sesquiterpenes, myrcene, terpene derivatives, citronellyl acetate or (2) propylene glycol or dipropylene glycol in a dental vehicle of pH below 8.5 and free of oxidizing agents.

Description

Descrição Detalhada do Invento

Detailed Description of the Invention

The following examples are more illustrative of the nature of the present invention, but it is clear that the invention is not limited thereto. The compositions are prepared in a customary manner and all the amounts and proportions of said skins and the appended claims are by weight, unless otherwise noted.

The flavoring ingredient is a flavoring composition containing citral or cinnamic aldehyde, to which is added a terpene or sesquiterpene (Tables 4 to 7) or propylene glycol or dipropylene glycol as described in the experiments that follow the examples (Table 8).

Tables 4 to 7 inclusive disclose formulations containing a variety of flavoring agents including cinnamic aldehyde and citral yellowing with aging, and reducing said yellowing by the addition of limonene and other terpenes and sesquiterpenes, characterized by tri-substituted double bonds. Rectification of the pH to about 6 and the addition of TiO 2 further reduce the yellowing of these flavored formulations. It is evident that the foregoing detailed description is simply given as an illustration, and variations may be made thereto, so long as there is no departure from the spirit of the invention. The "Summary" given above is intended simply for the technical investigators and is not intended to carry any weight with regard to the scope of the invention.
