Fly ash from pulverised coal boilers is delivered to a storage site as a water suspension, the wt. ratio of ash to water being at least 1:1, pref. 2.5:1. Power industry slags and other waste solids may also be included in an amt. up to 20 wt.% of total. Good solidification is normally achieved after about 10 days. Suitable additives to control the hardening rate may also be included, e.g. lime, hydrated Al sulphate, hydrated Ca nitrate, hydrated Ca chloride, Na and K sulphate, etc. in an amt. up to 7 wt.% of total. Water hydrates and solidifies the ash, thus avoiding drainage of highly mineralised water, and permitting controlled storage of ash waste in dust-free form and to a high level.
