HAT THAT HAS CHIN STRIP MEMBERS FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a hat comprising cords connecting the band to chinstrap members, which are adjustable for placement under the wearer's chin.

STATUS OF THE TECHNIQUE

Hats for water sports such as surfing, kitesurfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, for example, are important for sporty people because of the usefulness of hats in terms of sun protection, eye protection from glare and protection from splashing water.

A common problem in the state of the art is that wind and water can pull the hat during these sports. A critical but very common event occurs when a person is underwater, after falling off a board or when diving under a wave, and the current and force of the water and waves can pull every piece of clothing the person is wearing. In the case of a hat, if not properly attached to the wearer's head, the hat will fall off or be pulled back, still secured around the neck. This situation can cause discomfort or even a serious injury to the user.

Another problem with hats known from the prior art is that the models designed to be used

- 2 in water sports, for example, are very visible. In other words, the hat elements that function as adjusting and locking members of the hat to the head have relatively larger proportions and are prepared from materials that are highly visible, leading to a poor design. In addition, the hat's large fitting and locking members can press on the delicate throat area or sometimes rest precisely on the jaw, which can cause discomfort, or prevent the wearer from tightening the chinstrap securely. In the prior art, hats with these attributes are disclosed, as can be seen in Documents US5765229A (MCLEOD, JODY E.; ROSENTHAL, BROCK J.), June 16, 1998, Figure 1; JP2012102436A (DIC PLASTICS INC), May 31, 2012, Figure 1; US2011055997A1 (TYLER RONALD), March 10, 2011, Figure 1. These hats may have the locking member positioned in an uncomfortable position near the ear and the adjustment members have a large, flat design.

Another problem related to the relatively larger proportions of the hat's fitting and locking members to the chin is the undesirable development of marked tan lines on the cheek, ear and neck where the chin strap is positioned.

Hats comprised in the prior art use materials that stretch and thus, under pressure, will stretch and expand. Thus, prior art hats are more likely to fall off the head when, due to external forces, the material stretches.

Thus, there is a need in the state of the art regarding the development of hats that have a special construction that allows them to stay on the head during sports practices. There are challenges to be overcome related to the development of more suitable forms of adjustable chin straps for

- 3 fasten the hat to your head and with the most effective adjustable back straps design to ensure a tight fit. There is a need to develop new solutions with strong materials to generally prevent the use of bulky fabrics, trims and belts.

- 6 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED MODALITIES

Reference will now be made in detail to preferred embodiments of the invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Whenever possible, the same reference numerals will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or similar parts.

The present invention relates to a hat (1) comprising:

a main hat portion (2) and a brim (3), which main hat portion (2) has an inner surface and an outer surface;

a band (4) disposed around a lower portion of the inner surface of the main hat portion (2) having a first cord (5) having a first end attached to a right-front attachment zone (7) in the band (2) and a second end fixed to a right-back fastening zone (8) on the band (2);

a second cord (6) having a first end attached to a left-front attachment zone (9) on the strap (2) and a second end attached to a left-rear attachment zone (10) on the strap (2) ) ;

a first chinstrap member (11) connected to the first cord (5);

a second chinstrap member (12) connected to the second cord (6);

a first locking member (13) attached to the first chinstrap member (11); and

- a second locking member (14) attached to the second chinstrap member (12); wherein the first strand (5) and the second strand (6) have a substantially circular cross-section;

the first chinstrap member (11) and the second chinstrap member (12) are slidably moved along the respective outer surfaces of the first string (5) and the second string (6); and the first chinstrap member (11) and the second chinstrap member (12) are connectable between the first locking member (13) and the second locking member (14) and are further adjustable for positioning underneath of the user's chin.

The present invention also comprises a method of retaining a hat on a person's head, wherein the method comprises the steps of:

a) Insert the main hat portion (2) on the head;

b) Adjusting the length of the first chinstrap member (11) and second chinstrap member (12) to position them under the wearer's chin;

c) Locking the first chinstrap member (11) and the second chinstrap member (12) by means of the first locking member (13) and the second locking member (14).

In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the right-front attachment zone (7) and the left-front attachment zone (9) are located adjacent to the intersection between the band (4) and the tab (3). In addition, the right rear attachment zone (8) and the left rear attachment zone (10) may be located adjacent to the intersection between the

- 8 band (4) and respectively the right rear panel (18) and the left rear panel (19).

As illustrated in Figure 5, with respect to preferred embodiments of the above-mentioned attachment zones, the dl:L ratio is equal to or greater than 11.0:29.5, where:

a) dl is an arc length from the right front attachment point (35) to the right rear attachment point (36) or an arc length from the left front attachment point (37) to the attachment point on the rear left side (38); and

b) L is an arc length from the front reference point (33) to the rear reference point (34).

Embodiments of the present invention, which have a dl:L ratio equal to or greater than 11.0:29.5, contribute to superior stability of the hats, allowing them to fit properly on the wearer's head, even when waves or strong winds, for example, hit the hat position.

As illustrated in Figure 5, in a more preferred embodiment of the areas for attaching the cords to the flap, the d2:L ratio is equal to or less than 10.5:29.5 and the d3:L ratio is equal to or less than 7, 0:29.5, where:

a) d2 is an arc length from the right front attachment point (35) to the front reference point (33) or an arc length from the left front attachment point (37) to the front reference point (33) );

b) d3 is an arc length from the rear right attachment point (36) to the rear reference point (34) or an arc length from the rear left attachment point (38) to the rear reference point (34) ); and

c) L is an arc length from the front reference point (33) to the rear reference point (34).

As illustrated in Figure 1, in a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the first strand (5) and the second strand (6) are of the same length and have a substantially circular cross-sectional area.

In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, at least one of the pairs is selected from the first locking member (13) and the second locking member (14) or the third locking member (23) and the fourth locking member (24) is interconnected by conventional male and female means.

With respect to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the first chinstrap member (11) or the second chinstrap member (12) comprises a strap for adjusting the length of the strap member under the chin so as to snugly fitting the hat to the wearer. In a preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the strap for adjusting the length of the under-chin strap member is attached to the conventional male locking member of the one selected between the first locking member (13) and the second locking member. (14) . Thus, in an embodiment according to the present invention, the first locking member (13) is a male connector which is attached to the first chinstrap member (11), wherein such a first chinstrap member (11) comprises a strap for adjusting the length of the strap member under the chin. Otherwise, in another embodiment according to the present invention, the second locking member (14) is a male connector which is secured to the second chinstrap member (12), wherein such a second chinstrap member (12) comprises a strap for adjusting the

- 10 strap member length under the chin. In each case mentioned above, the other locking member has a female connector.

As can be best seen in Figure 3, in another embodiment of the present invention, the hat comprises a rear opening (20) located between the main hat portion (2) and the band (4). Furthermore, the hat may comprise a third locking member (23) and a fourth locking member (24) and optionally an adjustable length member (29) and a strap member (31).

The pairs consisting of the first locking member (13) and the second locking member (14) and the third locking member (23) and the fourth locking member (24) can preferably be selected from any locking device illustrated in Figures 4A, 4B or 4C. However, it should be understood that other common devices used as locking members fall within the scope of protection of the present invention, such as an adjustable slip-on strap with slip-on closure or a self-strip metal belt closure.

In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, as best seen in Figure 4A, the conventional male means comprises a resilient loop in the male connector (21) and the conventional female means comprises an opening in the female connector (22). When a locking movement is performed, the two resilient lugs on the male connector (21) engage the opening in the female connector (22). When an unlocking movement is performed, the two resilient lugs on the male connector (21) are tightened while simultaneously the opening in the female connector (22) is pulled out.

In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, as can be best seen in Fig.

- 114Β, the conventional male means comprises a resilient lug on the male connector (21) and the conventional female means comprises an opening in the female connector (22) and an unlocking button (32). When a locking movement is performed, the two resilient lugs on the male connector (21) engage the opening in the female connector (22). When an unlocking movement is performed, the two resilient lugs on the male connector (21) are pulled out of the female connector (22) when the unlocking button (32) is pressed.

In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, as best seen in Figure 4c, at least one of the pairs selected from the first locking member (13) and the second locking member (14) or the third locking member (23) and the fourth locking member (24) is interconnected by strip connecting members wherein the male strip connector member has a plurality of buttons (25) and the female strip connector member has a plurality of openings (26) ) . This locking device allows for correct length adjustment.

In another embodiment according to the invention, as illustrated in Figure 3, when the third locking member (23) and the fourth locking member (24) are strip connecting members, as seen in Figure 4C, they are secured to the respective end portions of the band (4) in the left-rear attachment zone (10) and in the right-rear attachment zone (8).

In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, at least one of the pairs selected from the first locking member (13) and the second locking member (14) or the third locking member (23) and the fourth locking member (24) ) is interconnected by adjustable hook and loop tape, for example a Velcro TM tape.

The first strand (5) and the second strand (6) may comprise a single yarn or, in a preferred embodiment, comprise a bundle of fibers twisted together.

In a preferred embodiment, the first strand (5) and the second strand (6) are prepared from materials that have a high modulus of elasticity, which shows a low proportional deformation, namely a small change in length divided by the original length, when subjected to a stress load.

In a preferred embodiment, a polymer or composite may be used in preparing the first strand (5), the second strand (6), the first chinstrap member (11) and the second chinstrap member (12). The polymers and copolymers can be selected from one or more of the groups consisting of polyester, polyamides, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyesterpolypropylene copolymers, polyester-polyamide copolymers, and polyester-polypropylene-polyamide copolymers. The first strand (5) and the second strand (6) can also be prepared from composites, selected from strands having a core made of polypropylene and a cover of polyamide.

The properties of the material selected to be used in the first cord (5) and in the second cord (6) can lead to a desirable narrow range of diameter, contributing to a correct permanence of the hat on the wearer's head. The diameter of the cross-sectional area is in the range of 1 mm to 5 mm. The diameter of the first bead (5) and of the second bead (6) can be selected from, although not limited to, commercially available sizes, for example 1mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm or 4mm . In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the first strand (5) and the second strand (6) are made of a 3 mm round polyester strand.

- 13 The main hat portion (2), the brim (3) and the band (4) can be prepared from various materials used to prepare the components of a hat, e.g. polyester, 3D knit fabric, fabric synthetic made of acrylonitrile monomer, synthetic polymers, based on aliphatic or semi-aromatic polyamides, cotton, cotton blends, jersey knit, wool, acrylic/wool blends, denim, sneaker knit and moisture-wicking fabrics.

The flap can also be made of a plastic material, which is sewn into the selected fabric.

In a preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the hat according to the present invention comprises parts made of 3D knitted fabric, which allows maximum ventilation is important as the product is often used in a hot climate. This fabric prevents the head from overheating and creates added comfort for the wearer. When the wearer is doing a water sport, the 3D polyester mesh fabric additionally allows for quick water drainage and is therefore superior to hats that only have eyelets. Rapid drainage is important to prevent the crown of the hat from trapping water, thereby increasing the pull effect, and to improve the wearer's comfort.

3D mesh fabric, also called spacer fabric, can be made from polyester, polyamide or polypropylene, their combinations or other synthetic materials. A spacer fabric is a three-dimensional knitted fabric comprising two separate knitted substrates that are joined together or held apart by spacer filaments. The initial layer contributes to the release of moisture, the inner layer contributes to airflow and the third outer layer contributes to heat dissipation. There are two basic types of spacer fabrics, warp knitted spacer fabric and

- 14 weft mesh spacer. Other properties related to 3D knit fabrics have good compressive strength, proper pressure redistribution, good pliability, good shock absorption, comfortable filling characteristics, optimal expansion effect and good durability.

The first locking member (13), the second locking member (14), the third locking member (23) and the fourth locking member (24) can be made of known rigid plastic materials.

The technical attributes of the present invention can be applied to any types of hats, including those in which the brim covers the entire perimeter of the head. In a preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the hat is a cap. In a more preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the cap must be used when practicing water sports.

One of the advantages of the hat according to the present invention is that it achieves an invisibility design related to the drawstrings and chinstrap members. The constructive attributes of such components allow for increased attractiveness by more resembling the construction of a normal baseball hat as used on land. Baseball hats used on land are considered more attractive as they do not have chin straps. However, in order for a surf hat to fulfill its function and not fall off the head, it needs effective laces, chinstrap members and locking members such as those comprised in the hat of the present invention. In this sense, the materials used and the way in which the various parts of the area hat are fixed together, for example, the areas of attachment to the cords, are technical attributes that solve a technical problem related to the development of safer hats.

- 15 The circular cross-section of the cords is an essential technical attribute that contributes to the sliding of the two chinstrap members along the outer surfaces of the cords and to a more effective fit under the wearer's chin, which enhances the stability of the hat on the head. The sliding of the two chinstrap members along the outer surfaces of the cords also helps to better fit and adjust to different head shapes. On the other hand, when a hat has fitting members and completely flat straps to fasten it under the chin, the sliding of the flat fitting member is not as smooth as the sliding provided by cords having substantial circular cross-section.

Another advantage relating to a hat in accordance with the present invention is that the unique combination of attributes comprising the dimensions of the drawstrings and chinstrap members provides a way for tan lines to be kept to a minimum. The round construction of the laces means that very little of the skin is covered and because of the slight movements of the position, there will not be a visible tan line on the cheek, ears or side of the neck. Furthermore, the slim locking members under the chin further contribute to minimizing the occurrence of tan lines.

The first and second locking members can have anterior dimensions, about 10 mm, which contributes to the comfort of the user.

The laces are prepared from materials that have a high modulus of elasticity, which do not show substantial flexibility, and thus they contribute to preventing the hat from being pulled off the head or sliding over the wearer's head, even under extreme conditions. , for example, in underwater conditions or subjected to the impact of waves.

- 16 Another advantageous attribute of the hat according to the present invention relates to a better fit in an occipital area of a wearer's head. Thus, the perimeter of the band covers from a forehead area to an occipital area, contributing to a better fit of the hat and preventing it from falling under pressure due, for example, to the impact of waves. In a preferred embodiment for achieving such an advantageous result, the d5:d4 ratio is equal to or greater than 19.0:15.0. Another suitable range in accordance with the present invention is that the d5:d4 ratio is equal to or greater than 20.5:16.0, where:

a) d4 is an arc length from the top of the main hat portion (39) to the front reference point (33); and

b) d5 is an arc length from the top of the main hat portion (39) to the rear reference point (34).

Another advantageous attribute related to a lower perimeter of the main hat portion for the bands at the front compared to the opposite measure going to the rear position relates to preventing the brim from resting too deeply on the forehead, which would reduce the range of vision and would thus prevent the user from seeing well, which is very important for playing the sport and preventing potentially life-threatening injuries.

Furthermore, the flap can be turned upwards, which contributes to providing a better view to the user, when the user is, for example, facing downwards paddling on a board. This effect is achieved by tensioning the arc of the flap, so that the flap can maintain a neutral position or an upturned position. Furthermore, no hook and loop tape or the like is needed to achieve the face-up position.

In another embodiment according to the present invention, the chinstrap member can be arranged by incorporating at least one loop which is attached to the inner surface of a main hat portion, making it a multifunctional hat. Through this attribute, the hat can function as a surfing hat when the chinstrap limbs are in use, or as a normal hat like a baseball hat when worn with the chinstrap limbs stowed away and invisible.

In another embodiment according to the present invention, the materials selected to prepare the main hat portion may be malleable, allowing the hat to be completely collapsible and easily placed in a pocket or bag.

It is understood that the terms about and approximately refer to a range of values of plus or minus 10% of the specified number.

It is understood that the term substantially refers to a condition where the actual value is in the range of about 10% of the desired value, variable or related threshold, particularly within about 5% of the desired value, variable or related threshold or especially within about 1% of the desired value, variable, or related threshold.

1. A hat (1) having chin strap members comprising: a main hat portion (2) and a brim (3), which main hat portion (2) has an inner surface and an outer surface; a band (4) disposed around a lower portion of the inner surface of the main hat portion (2); characterized in that it has a first cord (5) having a first end attached to a right-front attachment zone (7) on the band (2) and a second end attached to a right-back attachment zone (8) on the band (2); a second cord (6) having a first end attached to a left-front attachment zone (9) on the strap (2) and a second end attached to a left-rear attachment zone (10) on the strap (2) ); a first chinstrap member (11) connected to the first cord (5); a second chinstrap member (12) connected to the second cord (6); a first locking member (13) attached to the first chinstrap member (11); and a second locking member (14) secured to the second chinstrap member (12); wherein the first strand (5) and the second strand (6) have a substantially circular cross-section; the first chinstrap member (11) and the second chinstrap member (12) are slidably moved along the respective outer surfaces of the first string (5) and the second string (6); and the first chin strap member (11) and the second 2. The hat that has chin strap members, according to the preceding claim, characterized in that the d2:L ratio is equal to or less than 10.5:29.5 and the d3:L ratio is equal to or less than 7 ,0:29.5, where: a) d2 is an arc length from the right front attachment point (35) to the front reference point (33) or an arc length from the left front attachment point (37) to the front reference point (33) ); and b) d3 is an arc length from the rear right attachment point (36) to the rear reference point (34) or an arc length from the rear left attachment point (38) to the rear reference point (34) ). - the locking member (24) is interconnected by strip connecting members wherein the male strip connector member has a plurality of buttons (25) and the female strip connector member has a plurality of openings (26). The hat having chinstrap members according to any one of claims 1 to 5, characterized by at least one of the pairs selected from the first locking member (13) and the second locking member (14) or the third locking member (23) and the fourth locking member (24) are interconnected by adjustable hook and loop tape. 11. The hat having chinstrap members according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the hat is a cap. 12. The hat having chinstrap members according to the preceding claim, characterized in that the brim (3) maintains a neutral position or a turned position. 13. The hat having chinstrap members according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the band (4) extends on a perimeter covering from a forehead area (27) to an occipital area (28) and the ratio d5 :d4 is equal to or greater than 19.0:15.0 where: a) d4 is an arc length from the top of the main hat portion (39) to the front reference point (33); and b) d5 is an arc length from the top of the main hat portion (39) to the rear reference point (34). 14. The hat having chinstrap members according to any one of the preceding claims, The hat having chinstrap members according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that it additionally comprises a rear opening (20).
