Okazalo sie, ze jezeli pary spi¬ rytusu przepuszczac w temperaturze okolo 400—600°C w obecnosci pary wodnej po¬ nad zelazem lub tlenkami zelaza, to za¬ chodzi reakcja: C2H6OH + 3 H20 = 2C02 + 6 H2.Reakcja zachodzi szybciej, jezeli zelazo, wzglednie tlenki zawieraja niektóre do¬ mieszki, jak tlenki manganu, bizmutu, ceru i tym (podobnych.Reakcja idzie tern szybciej im przy wyz¬ szej temperaturze sie pracuje, wtedy jednak powstaja wieksze ilosci tlenku wegla.Spirytus moze byc nierafinowany, po¬ niewaz fuzel rozklada sie w tych warun¬ kach podobnie.Znaczenie tej metody polega na tern, ze na 1 kg zwiazanego azotu potrzeba zuzyc 1 kg alkoholu etylowego, zas 1 kg zwiaza¬ nego azotu uzyty jako nawóz pod ziemnia¬ ki spowoduje podwyzke plonu ziemniaków wystarczajaca na wyprodukowanie 10 kg alkoholu.
