Abstract

573,022. Furnace atmospheres. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Aug. 7, 1942, No. 11092. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1941. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group II] Molybdenum trioxide is reduced by heating it in a mixture of a reducing gas, which may be hydrogen and an inert gas, which may be steam or nitrogen, shutting off the supply of inert gas when the reduction of the trioxide to dioxide is nearly complete, and continuing the heating in the reducing gas to complete the reduction to molybdenum. The temperature and the rate of flow of the reducing gas may be increased before shutting off the inert gas and may be maintained at the higher values until the reduction is complete. The trioxide may be moistened with water and passed through an extrusion machine of usual form for the formation of pellets which after drying are placed in boats 19 and passed through an inclined tube 23 in a furnace 21. Water for the formation of steam is admitted through a tube 24 and hydrogen through a tube 32, a small exhaust pipe 34 being provided. In a modification, the reduction to dioxide may be effected in ammonia and the reduction to molybdenum completed in hydrogen.
