Abstract
<PICT:0859254/III/1> A hydrogen generator 1 is connected to a pair of converters 4, 5 which are arranged to work alternately, a cooler 9 for pure hydrogen, a cooler 6 for crude hydrogen leaving the generator 1 and a sulphur removal unit 7. During the hydrogen "make" step, steam is fed through the inlet valve 18 into the generator 1. The crude product gas passes through the cooler 6 and the sulphur removal unit 7 into the converter 5, and pure hydrogen leaves the cooler 9 at 26. The cooler 6 brings the mixture of nascent hydrogen and undecomposed steam to a temperature which is favourable for the CO conversion. Direct cooling may also be effected by adding a cooling agent to the mixture. Reduction gas is fed through the inlet valve 17 into the generator 1, and enters the converter 4 through the line 10. Flue gases leave the converter 4 through the lines 11 and 12. When the calcium carbonate in the converter 4 has been converted back to quick-lime (CaO) and the quicklime in the converter 5 has been saturated by carbon dioxide and converted to calcium carbonate, the valves 13a and 13b, 14a and 14b, 23b and 23a and 24b and 24a are switched over so that product gas now passes through the converter 4 and reduction gas passes through the converter 5.
