Abstract

An apparatus and method are provided for conducting a nucleic acid amplification reaction based on a preset thermal profile. The apparatus comprises a heat block designed with a plurality of wells for receiving one or more sample vessels each containing a reaction mixture. A heating element heats up the heat block in accordance to the temperature and duration settings indicated by the preset thermal profile. The apparatus also comprises a detection compartment (i.e., separated from the heat block), which permits naked-eye colorimetric detection of a target nucleic acid as an excitation light generator illuminates the reaction mixture.
