Abstract

1. Process for treating a solid material reduced to pieces inside a treatment chamber (1) of elongated shape provided with a flat bottom (13) extending between an upstream end communicating with a supply chamber (2) and a downstream end for pouring the treated material and along which bottom the material (4) is pushed by a piston (3) which undergoes longitudinal reciprocating movements and forms a layer (40) through which there is made to travel downwardly a current of hot gases introduced in the upper part of the treatment chamber (1) and aspirated through at least one permeable part (14) of the bottom (13), the material passing in succession from the upstream end to the downstream end of the chamber (1), through a pyrolysis zone (P) and a treating zone (G), characterised in that, bearing in mind the dimensional characteristics of the installation and the nature and the particle size of the material (4), a maximum height (h1) of the layer of material (40) is determined which results in allowable conditions of circulation of the hot gases, the charge of material (4) is given, at its entry in the treatment chamber (1), a height (h2) less than the maximum height (h1), and the increase in the height of the layer of material (40) resulting from the pushing action of the piston and the thermal reaction from the entrance into the treatment chamber (1) to the end of the pyrolysis is limited so that the height (h) of the layer (40) remains less than the maximum height (h1) throughout the length of the pyrolysis zone (P).
