Abstract

A coin tester directs a laser beam 13 across the path of a coin 4. A laser detector 3 detects the laser light, and by measuring the extent to which the laser light is blocked by the coin, can determine a dimension of the coin, such as its diameter. The laser beam may be in the form of a line, which scans across the face of the coin as the coin moves through the tester. This can be used to determine the area of the coin, which is useful for determining the validity of non-circular coins. The detector is made up of strips of individual detectors, or pixels. The number of pixels that receive the laser light is used as an indication of the dimension of the coin.
