A method for inhibiting scale formation and/or removing formed scale and for extracting energy from a H2S-containing geothermal fluid comprising: (a) introducing into the H2S-containing fluid a composition selected from the group consisting of sulfurous acid and sulphurous acid precursors to lower the pH of the solution (b) extracting energy from the resulting composition.
