Description

217V52 n 1 I i I I No-' 217752 Date: 30/10/86 NEW ZEALAND PATENTS ACT. 1953 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION 27 OCT 1987 7 "Improvements in/or relating to door assemblies" K We, BARMAC ASSOCIATES LIMITED, a New Zealand company, of 140-150 Lambton Quay, Wellington, New Zealand hereby declare the invention for which X / we pray that a patent may be granted to i&S/us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: - ?17752 f i : -O 3o-<0.fo Cm( Improvements in or relating to a door assembly.
Access doors in heavy machinery are sometimes necessary to gain access to the interior. An example where such a doorway is desirable is a vertical shaft impact crusher where an opening in the outer casing wall can provide access to the operating zone surrounding the rotor.
With such a door it is necessary to ensure the closing action will operate in adverse conditions to produce a good seal.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a door assembly which will go at least some way to meeting the above mentioned requirements or will provide a choice over existing door assemblies at present available.
Accordingly the invention consists in:-an assembly comprising a wall with an opening therethrough thereof; a door for said opening; pivot mounts on the outer face of the door intermediate of the sides thereof.; a pivotal hinge frame with pivot connections to the pivot mounts on the door, said hinge frame extending across the width of the door and having at one end further pivot connections beyond the edge of the door and at the other end having a latchable member; V fcfc**.- 1 • - *';vc^.- w.,^ ■>• •*- (.. v 4^ 717752 Arp .(0 -qo Sail C o hinge frame mounts fixed to the wall at one side of the opening, and pivotally connected to the further pivot /Connootionf- Connect (Cut •, lever latch mounts fixed to the wall at the side of the opening opposite said hinge frame mounts for the hinge frame; a lever latch arm having a pivot connection at one end pivotally connected to the lever latch mounts and having an engagement detent detachably engaged with said latchable member with a length of the lever latch arm extending beyond the engagement position; a catch means attached to said hinge frame to engage with the other end of said lever latch arm when the door is closed, the construction and arrangement being such that in use the door is movable towards a closed position by a closing force applied to the hinge frame thereby pivoting the hinge frame upon the hinge frame mounts and when the door is adjacent to the closed position the lever latch arm is engageable with the hinge frame by engaging the detent in said lever latch arm with the latchable member on the hinge frame, with the length of the lever latch arm beyond the engagement position allowing an operator a mechanical advantage to move the door to the fully closed position in which said other end of the lever latch arm is engaged and held in place by said catch means. r« \XovaJ« V,' a 17752 o an engagement detent in use to engage the lever latch engagable member ot said hinge frame with a length of the lever latch arm extending beyond^fctfe engagement position a catch means associated with said hinge frame to engage with said lever latch arm when the door is closed, the constructiorvind arrangement being such that in use the door may be moved towards th^closed position by a force applied to the hinge frame pivoting Uje^aoor about the hinge mounts and when the door is adjacent to the closed position the lever latch arm may be engaged with the hinge frame byengaging the detent in said lever latch arm with the lever latch engagcjMe member on the hinge frame with the length of the lever latch arm b$#t>nd the engagement point allowing an operator a mechanical advantage to move the door to the fully closed position where the lever latch able to be engaged by and hold with said catch One preferred form of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 is an elevation of the door assembly according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail of the door lever latch arm.
The present invention will be described with particular reference to a vertical shaft impact crusher and providing an access way through the side wall of the housing therein but it will be appreciated that the door could be used to provide an access way through the housing of any plant where the characteristics of the door assembly according to the present invention would be desirable.
The door assembly comprises a door 1, for example, a piece of metal shaped generally to conform with the surface curvature of the housing~2^wtth.which the door has to engage. A hinge assembly 3 is made up of a top arm 4 .-.J.,. arm 5 with each of the arms being made up of two closely spaced parallel members. The arm 4 at one end is pivotally connected to a lug 6 by a pivot pin 7 and the arm 5 is pivotally connected to a lug 8 by a pivot pin 9. The lugs 6 and 8 are fixed preferably by welding to the housing 2. The pivots 7 and 9 are in line as illustrated in Figure 1.
At the opposite end of the hinge assembly is a bar 10 substantially normal and suitably fixed to the arms 4 and 5.
The door is carried on the hinge assembly by lugs 13 and 14 welded to project from the door 1 at approximately the mid point of the width of the door. Pivots 11 and 12 pass through lugs 13 and 14 to provide a pivotal connection between the door 1 and hinge assembly. The spacing between the hinge pivots 7 and 9 and the door pivots 11 and 12 creates a mechanical advantage to assist in opening and closing the door when a force is applied to the bar 10.
A lever latch assembly 15 has mounting lugs 16 welded to the wall of the casing 2 and a lever latch arm 17 is pivotally connected at 18 to the mounting 16. The lever latch arm 17 has a hook recess 19 in use designed to engage with the bar 10. A force applied at the end of the lever arm 17 magnifies the closing force upon the door through the mechanical advantage between the point of applied force on the bar 10, the hinge pivots 7 and 9 and the door pivots 11 and 12. The mechanical advantage achieved can of course vary but a mechanical advantage between 16 and 25 is desirable with a preferred mechanical advantage in the order of 20 being that achieved with the embodiment illustrated in the drawings.
The lever arm 17 is retained in place by a spring loaded catch 20 with the end of the lever arm 17 incorporating a cam face 21 designed to engage and move the catch 20 back against the housing spring as the lever arm 17 approaches^the //'V springs back to engage the end of the arm 17 as shown in Figure 2.g closed position. When the arm 17 is in the closed position the catcbj^jfc7 'V ■% I V & 0CT/9& When it is desired to open the door the catch 20 is pulled against the action of the spring until the arm 17 is released.
The shape of the arm 17 adjacent the hook recess 19 provides an abutment or head 22 which will engage with the bar 10 so that as the lever 17 is swung about the pivot 18 away from the door a magnified force will be applied to the bar 10 to break open the door 1.
The present invention allows a substantial force to be applied to the door both to close the door 1 against the opening in the housing 2 and to break open the door 1 which because of the material packed against the door on the inside of the housing might be otherwise difficult to open. This magnified force that can be applied generates the jacking action needed to ensure the adequate operation of the door. Also the forces that can be generated will crush or not significantly be adversely interfered with by small obstacles which in more conventionally designed doors may present a problem.
As a security measure if desired a locking bar or padlock can be inserted through the aperture 23 preventing the pin or catch 20 from being disengaged from the lever arm 17.
In order to operate the present invention assuming the door is open the lever arm 17 will be swung away from the door opening and the door will be brought towards the closed position by applying a force to the door or the hinge assembly towards the bar 10 end thereof. When the door is adjacent the closed position the hook recess 19 of the arm 17 can engage the bar 10 so that a force moving the lever arm 17 towards its closed position will apply a magnified force to close the door. Because the force is applied towards the mid point of the door 1 through the lugs 13 and 14 the door will be pushed against the housing tending to spread slightly thus ensuring a-gqod^seal against the casing 2. When the lever is in the closed positi 4 i $ 1 t /Tn i © ! i i i i I i I I t J i i j i 1 Figure 2 it will displace the catch 20 and then the catch 20 under the influence of the spring will return to retain the lever in the closed position thus latching or locking the door closed.
When it is required to open the door the catch 20 is pulled against the action of the spring to release the arm 17. It is likely that in the case of a vertical impact crusher a bank of stone will be built up against the interior of the door and as this stone will be packed very tightly it may not be easy to open the door. Thus the present invention provides a jacking mechanism with the protuberance 22 engaging with the bar 10 so that a force applied at the end of the arm 17 will through mechanical advantage generated create a force sufficient to break open the door 1. ✓ 717752
