Abstract
High purity magnesium oxide is obtd. from calcium and magnesium contg. mineral by (a) granulating and thermally decomposing the mineral; (b) leaching with an aq. soln. of saccharose (-contg. prod.) to obtain hydrated magnesium oxide suspended in a Ca saccharate soln.; (c) sepg. the magnesium oxide by filtering or centrifuging, purifying by successive washing steps and then calcining; and (d) treating the Ca saccharate soln. with a carbonating agent to ppte. calcium carbonate, the resulting saccharose soln. being recycled to the leaching stage (b).
