Description
The present invention relates to new equipment for raising, lowering and rigging sails on all kinds of vessels from the smallest sailboats to vessels of any appropriate length. Of the other sail maneuvering equipment currently on the market, some have the disadvantage that they are very labor-intensive, which means that they are largely based on manual work with the problems this entails.
Others depend on complicated and high-tech equipment to maneuver the sails. The high investment costs and difficult maintenance problems as well as tendencies towards failure in the marine environment make it difficult, if not impossible, for small boat owners to use such equipment in their vessels. Other sailing units require too much sailing work, either with the help of winch devices or the necessary use of complicated rigging equipment. The present invention overcomes these previous problems by providing a simplified method for rigging and handling the sail cloth that makes up the sail guide. The object of the invention is then open to being used in different rig constructions, namely masts braced by a tripod construction, free-standing masts or masts with stays and bar dunnages as well as masts supported in any other suitable way. The sail maneuver according to the invention is also suitable for remote control from the wheelhouse or any other place on the vessel, or it can be fully automated by using a microprocessor.
The mechanism for sail fittings is simple and robust, unlike other sailing equipment that often uses parts with tight machining tolerances, which tends to cause many mechanical failures and problems with corresponding danger to crew and maintenance workers.
With the present invention, many of the above-mentioned difficulties can be overcome, as will be apparent from the following.
The subject of the present invention thus comprises a rotatable mast on which upper and lower raw arms are attached, hinged to the mast in the middle and supported by two inclined rods, which in turn are connected by sliding sleeves. In the version to be discussed here, two outriggers extend from a cap on the top of the mast to the ship's deck. The two sleeves are connected to a hydraulic cylinder and also connected to the four inclined rods. As movement is produced by the hydraulic cylinder, the sliding sleeves are pulled together, while the inclined rods that are connected to the sliding sleeves and with the raw arms at their other outer ends are pulled together, so that the two upper raw arms as well as the two lower raw arms are pulled tightly against the mast. A protective cover can then be pulled up and over the covered sail. This sleeve will then also serve to pull the sail closer to the mast.
Use of the present invention in operation will be apparent from the following description.
The mast 5, which is applied to the two sleeves 3 with its inclined rods 4 which in turn are connected to the raw arms 3, is attached to the ship's deck, as will be seen from fig. 4. The cap 7 is placed over the top of the mast 5 and the two support legs 6 are connected to this cap 7 which extends down to the deck in a tripod position, where they are fixed by suitable means
gjort til dekket.made to cover.
A sail, which is not shown, is connected in the usual way to both the upper and lower hinged raw arms 1. The device according to the invention is then ready for use.
The sail can be fastened by activating the hydraulic cylinder 8 using normal means, which brings the two sliding sleeves 3 together on the mast 5, so that the two inclined rods 4 are retracted to the closed position, which automatically also retracts the hinged raw arms 1 with respectively upper and the lower end of the mast 5 to a folded position against the mast. The sail which is attached to the booms 1 will then be lashed against the mast 5, as indicated in fig. 3. A protective sleeve 10 is placed at the lower end of the mast 5, and arranged and arranged to be hoisted up and over the furled sail as well as the folded slanting rods 4 and raw arms 1, so that the sail is maintained in the furled position against the mast 5 as a compact protected device.
As shown in fig. 4, the rotatable mast 5 can be turned with the help of the hand shaft 9, the turning movement being facilitated by the bearing bushings 11, which allows the mast 5 to be turned in any direction with the aim of being able to set the sail which is connected to the raw arms 1 in such a way way that it can catch the prevailing wind from any direction.
The sail can be quickly unfolded and deployed by removing the protective cover and influencing the sliding sleeves by means of the hydraulic cylinder to move away from each other.
It will be appreciated that the mast can be held upright on the ship's deck by means other than the outriggers described above. It will also be realized that in the event of a mechanical failure of the hydraulic cylinder or in an emergency, or possibly when using the present invention in developing countries with a lack of high technology, the sliding sleeves according to the invention will be able to be moved with the help of ordinary ropes and mechanical pulling means, thereby raise and lower the sail as described above, which in all cases will allow easy and quick raising, fitting and setting of the sail, which is the purpose of the present invention.
The description above indicates an embodiment of the present invention, but this can also be used and adapted to the other embodiments which may be similar to or deviate from the means indicated above, but which will nevertheless lie within the scope of the invention, as determined by the following patent claims.
