Description

A DEVICE FOR CLEANING AND GUTTING FISH
Introduction
The present invention relates to a device for cleaning and gutting fish. In particular, the present invention relates to a compact and cost-effective machine for cleaning and gutting fish, in particular to be installed on a fishing vessel for use in offshore conditions. The device comprises a work bench, a support arrangement for holding the fish on the work bench and a cutting arrangement for cutting the fish.
Prior art
It is desirable to clean and gut fish as early as possible after that the fish has been caught in order to avoid spoiling the fish. In addition, it is desirably to reduce undesirable weight of the catch that cannot be sold. Accordingly, cleaning and gutting of fish is preferably done immediately after catching the fish on a fishing vessel at sea. The process of cleaning and gutting fish usually involves a plurality of operation, such as opening the body of the fish, removal of guts, cutting and removal of the head, and etcetera.
Machines for cleaning and gutting fish are available on the marked for offshore use. These machines are configured to perform above mentioned plurality of cleaning and gutting operation by means of displacing the fish between a plurality of separately located stations, where each station provides a single of these cleaning and gutting operations. For example, at a first station the body of the fish is cut open, at a second station the guts of the fish are removed, at a third station the head of the fish is removed. The fish is transported between the plurality of stations by means of a conveyor band, or by revolving a plurality of chambers to the stations in consecutive order, and etcetera.
A problem with prior art machines is that they are extensive in size and requiring valuable space on the fishing vessels. Accordingly, prior art machines can only be installed on sufficiently large fishing vessels. A further problem is that these machines due to their size are expensive and complex. Yet another problem is that a malfunction of a single station may result in that machine as a whole becomes inoperative.
GB229303 discloses a machine adapted to remove the heads and intestines of fish. The machine comprises U-shaped troughs with fixed sides for the fish and a gear wheel with links of chains for displacing the troughs. The machine further comprises a knife and a fork adapted to separate the head and the guts from the body.
US3838478 discloses a gutting machine for fish. The machine comprises a rotatably driven clip spider including body clips, a bel ly opener, intestine stripper and a neck cutter. The clip spider is adapted to be rotated so that the fish is subjected to the belly opener, the intestine stripper and the neck cutter.
Summary of the invention
The invention has for its object to remedy or to reduce at least one of the drawbacks of the prior art, or at least provide a useful alternative to prior art. A first object of the invention is to provide a compact and cost effective device for cleaning and gutting fish. A second object of the invention is to provide a device for cleaning and gutting fish with improved reliability.
These objects are achieved through features, which are specified in the description below and in the claims that follow. In particular the objects are achieved by means of a device for cleaning and gutting fish according to claim 1. The device comprises a work bench, a support arrangement for holding the fish on the work bench, and a cutting arrangement for cutting the fish. The device ischaracterized in thatthe support arrangement comprises a first plate and a second plate, spaced apart and positioned extending away from the work bench, wherein the support arrangement comprises a receipt state in which the first plate and the second plate are positioned so to enable the fish to be introduced between the plates on the work bench, and a support state in which the first plate and the second plate are positioned so that the plates and the work bench are in abutment with the fish, wherein the device further comprises a displacement mechanism adapted to controllably displace at least one of the plates on the work bench so that the support arrangement is changed between the receipt state and the support state, wherein the cutting arrangement is adapted to execute a first cutting operation and a second cutting operation while the fish is in a static state on the work bench and supported by the support arrangement in the support state.
The support arrangement is adapted to be changed between the receipt state and the support state. In the receipt state, the fish is adapted to be received between the first plate and the second plate on the work bench. In the support state, the fish is adapted to be maintained fixed in abutment with the first plate, the second plate and the work bench.
By means of the support arrangement, when the support arrangement is in the support state, the fish is being securely fixed in a predefined position in abutment with the first plate, the second plate and the work bench. Thereby, the device enables both the first cutting operation and the second cutting operation to be executed without displacement of the fish. Accordingly, the first cutting op eration and the second cutting operation may be executed on the fish without displacement. Thereby, the device of the invention enables a compact design that enables the device to be installed on fishing vessels unable to accommodate prior art sized devices for cleaning and gutting fish. The cost for producing the device of the invention is also reduced compared with prior art devices in that no mechanism for displacing the fish between different work stations is required. A plurality of device of the invention may also be installed on large fishing vessels to replace operation of a prior art extensive device.
The device of the invention further more provides an improved reliability in that a malfunction of one of the first and second cutting operation does not require complete interruption of the operation of the device as in prior art devices, instead operation of the other of the first and second cutting operation can be continued.
The term "cleaning and gutting fish" relates to operations in which the fish is subjected to cutting or other mechanical operation for opening or removing certain parts of the fish, such as the guts, the head, and etcetera. It shall be understood that the operations subjected to the fish by the device may be only be a part of the total operations for cleaning and gutting the fish.
It shall further be understood that the fish may be positioned manually between the plates by an operator when the support arrangement is in the receipt state. Alternative, the device may be provided with means for automatically positioning the fish between the plates. Likewise, the fish may manually be removed from the support arrangement after the fish has been subjected to the first cutting operation and the second cutting operation. Alternatively, the device may be provided with means for automatically removing the fish from the support arrangement.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the first cutting operation and the second cutting operation are adapted to be executed simultaneously or at least partly simultaneously. The support arrangement holds the fish securely fixed in the predefined position and thereby enables the first cutting operation and the second cutting operation to be executed simultaneously or at least partly simultaneously. Thereby, the device provide a high rate of operation without displacement of the fish. Accordingly, contrary to prior art devices, no transport time between the cutting operations is required.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the first cutting operation is adapted to open the fish by means of a cut directed along the length of the body the fish. The cut along the length of the body the fish opens up the body of the fish and exposes the guts and possible roe. The roe and the guts may thereafter be removed and separated manually by an operator. Preferably, the first cutting operation is arranged from the head towards the tail of the fish.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the cutting arrangement comprises a first cutting tool for the first cutting operation and the work bench comprises an elongated opening for enabling the
body of the fish to be subjected to the first cutting tool.

By means of arranging plates inclined in respect to the center line, the abutment of the plates along the body of the fish is improved in that the wides part of fish is predominantly at the neck of the fish. Accordingly, the support arrangement holds the fish securely fixed in the support state without
damaging the body of the fish.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the plates are arranged inclined in respect to the center line at an angle in the range of 3 -10 degrees, preferably in the range of 3 - 5 degrees.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the first cutting operation executes the cut extending in parallel to the center line. Preferably, the first cutting operation executes the cut at or in vicinity of the center line. The support arrangement will arrange the center of the body of the fish along the center line. When executing the cut at or in vicinity of the center line, the cut will be along the center of the body of the fish.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the support arrangement comprises a positioning device for setting the positioning of the fish in a certain position between the front end portion and the rear end portion of the support arrangement. The positioning device enables the fish to be positioned on the work bench between front end portion and the rear end portion of the support arrangement for an accurate position of the cut of the first cutting operation and the second cutting operation.
According to an embodiment of the invention, positioning device comprises an elongated obstruction adapted to be positioned between the gills and coilar bones of the fish.
