Abstract

New formulations of bacterial cellulose and a new method of preparing bacterial cellulose formulations exhibiting improved viscosity modifying properties especially with low energy used to effect viscosity changes therewith have been provided. Such methods include new co-precipitation with a water-soluble co-agent which allows precipitation in the presence of excess alcohol to form an insoluble fiber which can thus be utilized as a thickener or suspension aid without the need to introduce high energy mixture. Such bacterial cellulose properties have become available in the past, but only through large labor intensive and energy intensive processes. Such an inventive method now proposed thus provides for a bacterial cellulose-containing formulation which exhibits not only properties as effective as those of earlier bacterial celluloses, but in some ways improvements to such earlier types. Certain end-use compositions and applications which include these novel bacterial cellulose-containing formulations are also included in this invention.
