Abstract
En fremgangsmåte for elektromagnetisk undersøkelse av et område av sjøbunnen som antas eller er kjent for åinneholde et underjordisk hydrokarbonreservoar er beskrevet. Metoden innbefatter utsendelse av et EM-signal fra en horisontal elektrisk dipol (HED) transmitter og oppnå vertikal elektrisk dipol (VED) responsdata ved en fjerntliggende mottaker som reaksjon på dette. Undersøkelsesdata blir analysert ved sammenligning av VED-responsdata med bakgrunnsdata som ikke er følsomme for det postulerte hydrokarbonreservoar. Følgelig vil forskjellene mellom VED-responsdata og bakgrunnsdata tillate en identifisering av det bortgjemte hydrokarbonreservoaret. Bakgrunnsdata kan tilveiebringes ved magneto-telluriske undersøkelser, kontrollerte kildeelektromagnetiske undersøkelser eller fra direkte geofysiske målinger. Ved å benytte VEDresponsdata på denne måten kan undersøkelsen gjennomføres i grunnere vann enn det som tidligere har vært mulig, da VED-detektoren ikke er følsom for luftbølgekomponenter fra EM-feltet indusert av HED-transmitteren ved VED-detektoren.
