Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse angår en fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av keramiske isolasjonsmaterialer med regulert porøsitet ved sintring.
Det er kjent at tallrike moderne metoder for behandling av smeltet metall eller frembringelse av strømninger i sådant metall, krever egenskaper som det ikke er lett å kombinere for de materialer som kommer i kontakt med de flytende metaller.
Et sådant material må ikke påvirkes av det smeltede metall,
som kan være meget korroderende i varm tilstand, slik det er f.eks. tilfelle med alumin i vim og stal .
Videre må materialet uten å briste kunne tåle gjentatte, termiske sjokk, som kan være ganske kraftige, da det gjelder plutselig overgang fra vanlig omgivelsestemperatur til temperautren for det smeltede metall, og vice versa.
Vedkommende material må dessuten i oppvarmet tilstand ha
klart fastlagte elektriske egenskaper, således at materialet forblir isolerende eller ledende, alt etter hva som er påkrevet for det foreliggende formål.
Endelig må materialet forbli stabilt i oksyderende atmosfære.
En velkjent fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av keramisk isolasjonsmaterial går ut på å blande finfordelte pulvere av oksyder i gruppe IV i det periodiske system, sintre pulver-blandingen under trykk og ved høy temperatur med det formål å oppnå et sintringsprodukt med stor tetthet, hvorpå sintringsproduktet knuses til korn, som på nytt sintres under belastning. På denne måte oppnås imidlertid et meget kompakt produkt, som lett vil briste "hvis det utsettes for de ovenfor angitte temperaturvekslinger.
Det er også kjent å elte det fine pulver med en tilsats
av et fluorid av et element i gruppe IA, men dette gir likevel et kompakt keramisk produkt. Fluorid-ionet som sannsynligvis frigjøres, vil imidlertid ha en tendens til å fremme kornenes innbyrdes vedhefthing.
Det vil således innses at disse kjente fremgangsmåter
bare gjør det mulig å oppnå kompakte keramiske materialer, hvis egenskaper på ingen måte kan tilfredsstille de fordringer som er angitt ovenfor.
Det er derfor et formål for foreliggende oppfinnelse å angi en fremgangsmåte for å fremstille keramiske materialer som tilfredsstiller alle de krav som stilles til materialer som skal bringes i kontakt med smeltede metaller, idet vedkommende keramiske material under fremstillingen gis regulert porøsitet, som er tilpasset de termiske påkjenninger som materialet vil bli utsatt for i praktisk bruk.
Oppfinnelsen gjelder således en fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av keramisk, isolasjonsmaterial med regulert porøsi-tet og som er i stand til å motstå gjentatte termiske sjokk og ikke påvirkes av korroderende smeltet metall, som f.eks. aluminium eller stål, idet finfordelt pulver av oksyder av grunnstoffer utvalgt fra gruppene III og IV i det periodiske system sintres ved høyt trykk og høy temperatur i den hensikt å oppnå et meget kompakt sintringsprodukt som deretter knuses til kompakte korn.
På denne bakgrunn av kjent teknikk har fremgangsmåten i henhold til oppfinnelsen som særtrekk at de kompakte korn blandes med finfordelt pulver av oksyder av nevnte grunnstoffer fra gruppene III og IV i det periodiske system i et mengdeforhold som er bestemt av den tilsiktede porøsitet for det fremstilte material, og den frembragte blanding eltes med tilsats av 0,1 - 6 vektprosent av et fluorid av et
grunnstoff fra gruppe IA i det periodisek system, samt
formes til et sintringsemne, som sintres uten overtrykk i minst en time ved en temperatur mellom 850 og 1350°C i reduserende eller inert atmosfære.
Det vil åpenbart være enklest å anvende den samme blanding
av finfordelte oksydpulvere både for fremstilling av korn ved knusing og for dannelse av den finfordelte pulver-blanding som skal blandes med kornene. De anvendte kjemiske forbindelser for henholdsvis pulver og korn påvirker imidlertid i høy grad de mekaniske egenskaper for det fremstilte sluttprodukt. De mekaniske egenskaper forbedres ved anvendelse av oksyder av beryllium, kalsium, zirkonium, hafnium, lantan eller yttrium.
Vanligvis er det fordelaktig i henhold til oppfinnelsen å vibrere den eltede blanding en kort tid i en form før sintringen. Vibrasjon av blandingen i formen vil imidlertid ikke alltid forbedre det fremstilte produkt, og det bør til
og med anbefales å ikke ta med dette prosesstrinn når det anvendes korn av relativt store dimensjoner. I alle tilfeller må vibrasjonen bare finne sted i et kort tidsintervall.
Det bør bemerkes at den avsluttende sintringsprosess utføres 'ved relativt lav temperatur, idet fluor-ionet i varm til-
stand påvirker kornene og oksydpulverene. Det er vanligvis
en fordel å utføre denne sintring i en inert atmosfære,
skjønt en reduserende atmosfære er å foretrekke ved visse oksyder. I visse tilfeller er det en fordel å anvende hydrogen-atmosfære.
De utførelseseksempler som er angitt nedenfor er bare ment å- tjene til å anskueliggjøre op<p>finnelsen og utgjør ingen avgrensning av denne.
Et finfordelt pulver av zirkonium-oksyd (grunnstoff i gruppe
IVB) stabiliseres med kalk eller med yttrium- eller serium-oksyd, idet stabiliseringselementets andel bare utgjør omkring 5% av den totale vekt. Dette pulver har en sådan finhetsgrad at det kan passere gjennom sikt 27 i henhold til fransk standard (omkring 30 "mesh", US standard). 80%
av pulveret sintres under belastning og ved høy temperatur (1800°C) med det formål å oppnå et meget kompakt produkt
med praktisk talt ingen porøsitet. Det således oppnådde produkt knuses til korn med diameter på noen få millimeter.
Til dette kompakte, knuste produkt tilsettes resten av det finfordelte pulver. Denne blanding eltes så sammen med 1% litiumfluorid, hvorpå det hele plasseres i en grafittform og vibreres i noen få minutter. Formen og dens innhold o<p>pvarmes så i løpet av 2 timer til 1350°C i en reduserende atmosfære. Det oppnådde sluttprodukt hadde etter kjølingen en porøsitet av størrelsesorden 40%, og dette vil i vesentlig grad forbedre materialets motstand mot termiske sjokk.
Avsluttende sintring uten belastning i en reduserende atmosfære og i nærvær av litiumfluorid gjorde det mulig å anvende en temperatur 450°C lavere enn sintringstemperaturen ved frembringelse av det kompakte produkt for knusning til korn. Denne senkning av sintringstemperaturen gjelder også under andre temperaturforhold. Et oksydpulver som normalt sintres under belastning ved 1300°C kan således for foreliggende formål sintres uten belastning ved 850°C. Ved variasjon av mengdeforholdet mellom kornene fremstilt ved knusin<q> og det finfordelte pulver, vil det således være mulig å oppnå isolerende keramiske materialer med forskjellig porøsitet, som i et hvert tilfelle er tilpasset styrken av de termiske sjokk som materialet vil bli utsatt for i bruk. Det er imidlertid funnet fordelaktig å blande pulveret
med en andel av korn som overstiger 30% av den samlede vekt.
Endelig er det funnet at de keramiske materialer som frem-stilles ved den ovenfor angitte fremgangsmåte, forblir upåvirket i kontakt med korroderende smeltet metall, som aluminium eller stål, samt ikke fuktes av smeltet metall.
Når materialet fjernes fra det smeltede metall, vil det
således ikke forekomme noe materialtap eller uhensiktsmessig søl av vedkommende metallsmelte.
Et annet utførelseseksempel gjelder et tilfelle hvor kornene
og det finfordelte pulver utgjøres av ett og samme oksyd,
nemlig aluminiumoksyd. Kornene er i dette tilfelle relativt små og kan passere gjennom sikt 22 i henhold til fransk standard (100 "mesh", US standard), mens pulveret kan passere gjennom sikt 17 (325 "mesh", US standard). Blandingen av korn og pulver eltes sammen med 2% litium-
fluorid. Det frembragte produkt bindes ved tilførsel av en organisk gel av gummi-arabikum-type, som er kommersielt tilgjengelig. Dette organiske material anvendes utelukkende som et midlertidig bindemiddel og forsvinner når produktet oppvarmes.
Det eltede og bundne produkt innføres i en form og formes
ved sammenpresning, samt sintres så ved 1100°C i 6 timer i inert atmosfære.
Det således frembragte keramiske material er meget stabilt
og i høy grad i stand til å motstå termiske sjokk og den korroderende virkning av smeltet aluminium, eller i det minste like godt som <p>rodukter fremstilt ved mer kompliserte til-virkningsprosesser .
Ved variasjon av diameteren for de små korn og deres prosent-andel, var det mulig å oppnå en varierende porøsitet av det fremstilte keramiske material mellom 25 og 50%. Det ser imidlertid ut til at en porøsitet på 40% i de fleste til-
feller gir de største fordeler.
Forsøk utført for sammenlikning mellom et typisk kjent produkt som er kommersielt tilgjengelig, og et keramisk isolasjons-produkt i henhold til oppfinnelsen ga de resultater som er angitt nedenfor.
Den kommersielle Zr02 -keramikk hadde følgende materialdata:
Til sammenlikning hadde en ZrO^ -keramikk fremstilt ved oppfinnelsens fremgangsmåte følgende materialdata:
Forholdet R/E anses å gi uttrykk for et materials bestandighet overfor gjentatte varmesjokk, og det viste seg da også at en keramikkstav av det kommersielle materiale brast etter 2 gangers neddypping i flytende aluminium, mens en keramikkstav fremstilt i henhold til oppfinnelsen tålte 10 til-svarende neddyppinger. Begge staver hadde samme dimensjoner, nemlia en lengde på 10 cm og en diameter på 20 mm.
Claims (12)
1. Fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av keramisk, isolasjonsmaterial med regulert porøsitet og som er i stand til å motstå gjentatte termiske sjokk og ikke påvirkes av korroderende smeltet metall, som f.eks. aluminium eller stål, idet finfordelt pulver av oksyder av grunnstoffer utvalgt fra gruppene III og IV i det periodiske system sintres ved høyt trykk og høy temperatur i den hensikt å oppnå et meget kompakt sintringsprodukt som deretter knuses til kompakte korn, karakterisert ved at de kompakte korn blandes med finfordelt pulver av oksyder av nevnte grunnstoffer fra gruppene III og IV i det periodiske system i et mengdeforhold som er bestemt av den tilsiktede porøsitet for det fremstilte material, og den frembragte blanding eltes med tilsats av 0,1 - 6 vektprosent av et fluorid av et grunnstoff fra gruppe IA i det periodiske system, samt formes til et sintringsemne, som sintres uten overtrykk i minst en time ved en temperatur mellom 850 og 1350°C i reduserende eller inert atmosfære.
2. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1, karakterisert ved at den eltede blanding vibreres i en form en kort tid før sintringen.
3. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1 eller 2, karakterisert ved at som nevnte fluorid anvendes litiumfluorid.
4. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1 - 3, karakterisert ved at de kompakte korn av oksyder av grunnstoffer utvalgt fra gruppene III og IV blandes i en vektandel på 30% av totalvekten med nevnte finfordelte pulver.
5. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1-4, karakterisert ved at det som nevnte oksyd
av et grunnstoff i gruppe IV anvendes et metalloksyd som på forhånd er blitt stabilisert av et oksyd av et metall i gruppe IIA, f.eks. kalsiumoksyd.
6. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1 - 4, karakterisert ved at det som grunnstoff i gruppe IV anvendes et metall som på forhånd er stabilisert av oksydet av et grunnstoff i gruppe III.
7. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1-6, karakterisert ved at det som grunnstoffer fra gruppe IV i det periodiske system, anvendes zirkonium og hafnium.
8. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1-4, karakterisert ved at det som grunnstoffer i gruppe III i det periodiske system anvendes lantan
og yttrium.
9. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1-3, karakterisert ved at kompakte korn og finfordelt pulver av samme oksyder blandes i samme vektandel av blandingens totalvekt.
10. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 1-3, karakterisert ved at korn og pulver av ett og samme eneste oksyd blandes.
11. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 10, karakterisert ved at det som eneste oksyd anvendes et oksyd av et grunnstoff i gruppe III i det <p>eri-odiske system, og det i blandingen anvendes korn som kan passere gjennom sikt 22 og pulver som kan passere gjennom sikt 17 i henhold til fransk standard.
12. Fremgangsmåte som angitt i krav 10 eller 11, karakterisert ved at det som eneste oksyd anvendes aluminiumoksyd.
