Abstract
Fremgangsmåte ved utlutning av metallsulfider.Procedure for leaching metal sulphides.
Description
The present invention relates to a method for leaching sulphide ores and more particularly a hydrometallurgical treatment of sulphide ores to recover elemental sulfur and non-ferrous metals from the ore.
Treatment of sulphide ores, although attractive from the point of view that sulphide minerals can be concentrated by conventional beneficiation techniques, has become increasingly difficult due to consideration of the surroundings. If the ore or the ore concentrate is treated pyrometallurgically, significant amounts of sulfur dioxide will be formed and precautions are necessary that entail large capital investments to recover sulfur dioxide or to render it harmless.
Due to the fact that pyrometallurgical techniques often lead to the formation of large volumes of flue gas, very diluted with respect to sulfur dioxide, attention is increasingly directed towards the use of hydrometallurgical techniques to minimize problems in connection with the environment regarding the treatment of the sulphide ores.
Denne prosess har funnet stor anvendelse ved behandling av nikkelhoIdige og kobberholdige sulfidkonsentrater, men prosessens økonomi er avhengig ikke bare av markedet for nikkel og kobber, men også for ammoniumsulfat, Sulfide ores can be leached with aerated ammoniacal solutions to dissolve non-ferrous metal values, to obtain iron oxide and to recover sulfur as ammonium sulfate, which can be used as a fertilizer. This process has found wide application in the treatment of nickel-containing and copper-containing sulphide concentrates, but the economy of the process depends not only on the market for nickel and copper, but also for ammonium sulphate,
fordi 2 mol ammoniakk forbrukes pr. mol svovel som bindes således. because 2 moles of ammonia are consumed per moles of sulfur that are thus bound.
It has also been proposed to treat sulphide ores or concentrates by oxidative acid leaching to bind a major proportion of the sulfur in the ore or ore concentrate as elemental sulfur and a smaller proportion as sulphate. The advantages of oxidative leaching of sulphide minerals are: (1) most of the sulfur is bound in a way that can be easily stored, (2) the only leaching reagents used are air and water, (3) the elemental sulfur formed can be converted into pellets, (4) the elemental sulfur formed can be used to collect and recover unoxidized sulfides and/or insoluble precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, palladium, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium and iridium, and (5) the elemental sulfur can be converted to hydrogen sulphide for use as a precipitant for dissolved metals such as nickel, cobalt, copper and zinc. The oxidative acid leaching process has certain disadvantages which include the use of elevated temperatures and pressures requiring the use of expensive autoclaves. Furthermore, copper-iron sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, cubanite and bornite as well as pyritic minerals can only be leached oxidatively at such high temperatures that the sulphides are oxidized completely and exothermically to sulphate ions. Furthermore, expensive devices are required to take care of the large amounts of heat released by the essentially total oxidation of the copper-iron sulphide minerals. In order to bind the majority of the sulphide sulfur in copper-iron and pyritic minerals as elemental sulfur by acid leaching, these materials must be thermally treated at temperatures sufficiently high to cause a crystallographic transformation of the sulphides into a more reactive phase. The equipment for the thermal treatment of copper iron sulphide and pyritic minerals is added to the total costs of treating sulphide ore or ore concentrates.
British patent no. 240,888 describes a wet oxidation process for the treatment of metal-containing materials containing sulfur in the form of sulphides, and the described process includes subjecting these sulphide-containing minerals to an oxidation using a solution containing chromic acid as an oxidizing agent.
In such a wet oxidation of metal sulphides, the sulfur can be oxidized to different valence stages, and an intermediate stage is sulfur in elemental form.
However, acidic chromate solvents have the ability to oxidize elemental sulfur to sulfuric acid. For the purposes of the present invention, this oxidation is a wasteful use of the chromate's oxidizing ability.
It has now been discovered that metal sulfides can be treated hydrometallurgically with an acidic aqueous solution containing special oxidizing reagents to quickly dissolve essentially all metal values and to oxidize sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur and sulfate sulfur, which oxidizing reagents can be regenerated.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hydrometallurgical process for treating suWid ores, ore concentrates and sulphurous metallurgical intermediates to recover metal values and to bind a major proportion of the sulphide sulfur as elemental sulphur.
Generally speaking, the present invention comprises a method in which finely divided metal sulfides containing at least one non-ferrous metal are brought into contact with an aqueous acidic solution of at least one water-soluble, oxidizing compound selected from sodium dichromate, potassium dichromate, ammonium dichromate, chromic acid, sodium chromate and potassium chromate, and the method according to the invention is characterized by the fact that the water-soluble oxidizing compound is added to the acidic aqueous solution in an amount of at least 150% of the stoichiometric amount necessary to oxidize sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur and sulfate sulfur, and to oxidize all the iron present to iron. (III) state, and to dissolve the non-ferrous metals. Using the controlled conditions described according to the present invention, one not only avoids the production of a certain amount of sulfuric acid, but also obtains a usable product in the form of elemental sulphur.
Fremgangsmåten ifølge oppfinnelsen kan benyttes for The method according to the invention can be used for
Således behandles sulfidmalmer som inneholder to process all sulphide ores or ore concentrates, sulphurous metallurgical intermediates and other sulphurous substances to recover metal values and to bind sulphide sulfur as elemental sulfur and sulphate sulphur. For example, iron pyrites, marcasite, arsenopyrite and/or pyrrhotite can be treated to obtain iron oxides and sulfur both in elemental form and in the form of sulphate. However, the method according to the invention finds its greatest applicability in the treatment of sulphide ores containing non-ferrous metals. This is how sulphide ores containing
Ikke-jernmetallene er vanligvis forbundet med mineraler som chalcopyritt, cubanitt, bornitt, chalcocitt, covellitt,•digenitt, enargitt, tetra-hedritt, tennantitt, cobaltitt, famatinitt, stannitt, milleritt, kiselborditt, polydymitt, siegenitt, gersdorffitt, pentlanditt, violaritt, sfaleritt- og lignende. the non-ferrous metals nickel, cobalt, copper, lead and zinc: with advantage in the method according to the invention. The non-ferrous metals are usually associated with minerals such as chalcopyrite, cubanite, bornite, chalcocite, covellite,•digenite, enargite, tetra-hedrite, tennantite, cobaltite, famatinite, stannite, millerite, kiselbordite, polydymite, siegenite, gersdorffite, pentlandite, violarite, sphalerite and the like.
Although the ore, after suitable crushing and grinding, can be treated as it is in the present invention, it is advantageous to enrich the ore to obtain an ore concentrate. Common beneficiation techniques including sieving, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation and others can be used to obtain an ore concentrate. Regardless of whether the ore is concentrated or not, it is advantageous that mineral sulphides to be treated according to the invention are crushed to achieve maximum surface area to promote the liquid-solid reaction between the sulphide and the leaching solution and to improve the treatment properties. The particle size of the ore can vary widely. borders. However, it is preferred that the ore or ore concentrate has a particle size of about 100% minus 65 mesh ("Tyler Screen"). In most cases, an ore concentrate obtained from previous flotation with a particle size range of about 100% minus 100 mesh and about 25% plus 325 mesh can be advantageously treated according to the present invention.
The finely divided material is slurried with water and reagents to obtain a slurry containing between about 2 and 50% solids, advantageously between about 5 and 30 t Mass densities within certain areas ensure efficient equipment utilization, minimize the problems in connection with material processing and provides good contact between liquid and solid, i.e. between the leaching solution and the finely divided ore. It will be obvious to the person skilled in the art that the bulk density chosen in most cases can vary with the quality of the ore or ore concentrate and the desired concentration of metal values in the final solution.
The overall reactions between oxidizing compound and sulfides can generally be stated as a combination of the following with chalcopyrite as an example:
The reactions (1) and (2) indicate, without limiting the invention or specifying any particular reaction mechanism, an aid for calculating the material balance. To ensure that at least around 85% of the sulphide sulfur in the ore or ore concentrate is oxidized to elemental sulfur and sulphate sulphur, e.g. the water-soluble oxidizing compound to the water used to obtain the slurry in amounts equivalent to at least about 150%, most advantageously at least about 190%. of the stoichiometric amount required according to reaction (1).
Elektrolytisk regenerering kan beskrives som følger: As can be seen from reactions (1) and (2), the oxidizing compound is reduced by reaction with sulphide ore or ore concentrate, and the used leaching solution can, after treatment, to recover dissolved metal values as described below, be regenerated by chemical or electrolytic processes. For example. the spent leaching solution can be regenerated by passing an oxidizing gas, such as ozone or chlorine, through it. Electrolytic regeneration of the leaching solution can be carried out by usual electrolytic oxidation processes. For example, spent chromic acid solution can be placed in a suitable tank, such as a lead-lined tank, and electric current can be passed between insoluble electrodes, while an electric voltage of between about 1 volt and 5 volts is maintained across the electrodes to oxidize trivalent chromium ions to hexavalent state. Electrolytic regeneration can be described as follows:
Used leaching solutions are advantageously regenerated electrolytically because the electrolytic regeneration does not consume reagents, while regeneration by chemical processes involves the consumption of reagents such as chlorine or ozone.
Pyrrotitt som ikke er et ekte ikke-jernmetall- Pyrrhotite which is not a true non-ferrous metal-
Y Y
mineral kan selvfølgelig behandles for å gjenvinne ikke-jernmetaller i mineralet, f.eks. kan nikkelholdig pyrotitt behandles for å gjenvinne nikkel. Sulfidmineralene som inneholder ikke-jernmetallverdier oksyderes for derved å frigjøre elementært svovel og'for å oppnå en anriket oppløsning som inneholder ikke-jernmetallene og sulfatsvovel mens krom reduseres til treverdig tilstand fra den seksverdige. mineral can of course be treated to recover non-ferrous metals in the mineral, e.g. nickel-bearing pyrrhotite can be processed to recover nickel. The sulfide minerals containing non-ferrous metal values are oxidized to thereby release elemental sulfur and to obtain an enriched solution containing the non-ferrous metals and sulfate sulfur while chromium is reduced to the trivalent state from the hexavalent.
Because the leaching of the sulphide ore or ore concentrate is in most cases carried out below the boiling point of water, the liberated elemental sulfur which is not melted or agglomerated during leaching will remain in a finely divided state and can be easily recovered by flotation and subsequent purification by solvent extraction, smelting and filtration or by distillation. Alternatively, when the leached residue does not contain accompanying non-ferrous mineral sulfides and/or precious metals along with liberated elemental sulfur, the slurry of elemental sulfur and the enriched solution can be heated in an autoclave to a temperature above the melting point of sulfur. If the molten sulfur and the enriched solution are stirred sufficiently during cooling, the molten sulfur will form easily recoverable pellets that will contain all unreacted sulfides and all precious metals that accompanied the minerals to be treated. Unreacted sulphides and/or precious metals present can be recovered from these sulfur pellets by smelting and filtration.
All the iron that came with the sulphide ore or ore concentrate is dissolved as iron (III), which shows limited solubility in solutions with pH values above about 2, and this can be precipitated from the leaching liquid either before or after separating the leaching liquid from the leached residue. Thus, a major proportion of the dissolved iron can be precipitated as iron(III) hydroxide by adjusting the pH value in the used leaching liquid to above about 2, e.g. to between about 2 and 3.
Regenerering av den oksyderende forbindelse ved elektroutvinning The enriched leaching solution containing metals such as nickel, copper, cobalt, lead or zinc is treated to recover the dissolved values and to regenerate the oxidizing compound for return to the leaching step. Certain non-ferrous metals such as copper and silver can be electro-extracted from the enriched solution. In addition to the recovery of dissolved non-ferrous metals, electrorecovery will simultaneously regenerate part of the oxidizing compound that is. chemical equivalent to the amount of recovered metal values. Regeneration of the oxidizing compound by electroextraction
av oppløste ikke-jernverdier kan f.eks. angis som følger: of dissolved non-iron values can e.g. stated as follows:
C<r>2(S<0>4)3 + 3 CuS<O>^ <+> 7 H20 + 3 Cu° + H2Cr20? + 6 HjSO^ (4) C<r>2(S<0>4)3 + 3 CuS<O>^ <+> 7 H20 + 3 Cu° + H2Cr20? + 6 HjSO^ (4)
Alternatively, non-ferrous metals, such as nickel and cobalt, can be precipitated from the enriched solution as sulfides by using reducing conditions and sulfides that are more soluble than the non-ferrous metal values, e.g. pyrrhotite or hydrogen sulphide which are effective in precipitating most basic metals as sulphides. When precipitating non-ferrous metals from the enriched solution, elevated temperatures and pressure are advantageously used to facilitate the precipitation reactions. As a further alternative, the enriched solution can be treated by ion exchange, liquid-liquid extraction or reverse osmosis to either selectively separate one or more of the non-ferrous metals from the leaching solution and/or to obtain solutions that are more concentrated for the purposes of the metals, whereby optimal recovery of the metals from the solution is facilitated.
Acidified aqueous solutions of the oxidizing compounds according to the invention quickly and completely oxidize sulphide ores and ore concentrates even at ambient temperatures, and therefore leaching with these solutions can be carried out in ordinary leaching containers and advantageously in containers equipped with agitators to ensure good contact between liquid and solid. The leaching container can be equipped with heating or cooling windings so that the leaching solution can be kept at temperatures between about 10 and 110°C. The leaching step can be carried out either batchwise or continuously. If it is carried out on a continuous basis, it is advantageous to use the countercurrent principle.
Følgende eksempler skal illustrere oppfinnelsen nærmere. The following examples shall illustrate the invention in more detail.
Eksempel 1 Example 1
En prøve på et chalcopyrittflottasjonskonsentrat A sample of a chalcopyrite flotation concentrate
med en vekt på 33 g inneholdende 24,3 % kobber, 2,87 % nikkel,. 32,0 % jern og 3331 % svovel, ble oppslemmet med vann, 127 g with a weight of 33 g containing 24.3% copper, 2.87% nickel,. 32.0% iron and 3331% sulfur, was slurried with water, 127 g
Analysen av filtratet etter fjerning av jern er angitt i tabell I. sulfuric acid and 54 g of chromic acid (ie a stoichiometric chromic acid excess of about 90% according to reaction 1) to obtain a cpp slurry with a solids content of 9.4% by weight. The slurry was held at 80°C for 70 min. with sufficient stirring to keep the solids in suspension and to provide good liquid-solid contact. The slurry was filtered and the filtrate was analyzed and the results are shown in Table I. Copper, nickel and iron extraction of 99.6%, 98.9% and 95.6% respectively was achieved in this sample, while only 80% of the added chromic acid was consumed and 6l% of the sulphide sulfur was recovered as elemental sulphur. The filtrate was then neutralized with limestone at 80°C to raise the pH of the solution to 2.5 to precipitate most of the iron. All chromium values that precipitate together with iron(III) hydroxide can then be completely redissolved with dilute acid for recycling. The analysis of the filtrate after removal of iron is given in Table I.
Eksempel 2 Example 2
Den nøytraliserte opp-løsning ble deretter analysert og resultatene er angitt i tabell A sample of a pentlandite flotation concentrate weighing 40 g and containing 25.3% nickel, 0.68% copper, 32.2% iron and 37.0% sulfur was slurried with water, 156 g sulfuric acid and 166 g of chromic acid (ie a stoichiometric chromic acid excess of about 90% for the pentlandite reaction analogous to reaction 1) to obtain a slurry containing 9.1 wt # of solids. The slurry was held at 80°C for 70 min. with sufficient stirring to keep the solids suspended and to achieve good contact between liquid and solid. After the reaction was complete, the slurry was filtered and the filtrate was analyzed and the results are given in Table II. The analysis confirmed that extraction of nickel, copper and iron of 95.9%, 95.2% and 83.4% respectively > was achieved while the oxidation of sulphide sulfur gave 44% elemental sulphur, 4l% sulphate sulphur, while the rest remained unreacted. The filtrate was neutralized with limestone at 80°C to raise the pH to 2.5 and to precipitate most of the iron. All chromium values that precipitate with the iron (III) hydroxide can be redissolved substantially completely with dilute acid for recycling. The neutralized solution was then analyzed and the results are tabulated
